Can natural substances cause a herx?

Just wondering if anyone has taken herbs or other natural treatments and gotten a herx as a result. I'm still waiting to hear back about my lyme tests (don't have a diagnosis but the symptoms seem to fit), and in the meantime I was given some siberian ginseng for fatigue. I've been taking it for five days. I also took some awfully hot showers. Now I am getting a lot of pain in the knees, hands, neck, and leg muscles that I didn't have before (this is after 4 months of being sick)! I also feel even weaker and more fatigued. I suppose the illness itself might just be getting worse..

Re: Can natural substances cause a herx?

ac130,

How long ago were you bitten? If recently, you should start abx immediately! I hope your blood was sent to a reliable Lyme lab, but regardless of the results, Lyme is mostly diagnosed by symptomology, and your symptoms do sound like Lyme (to me). Do you have an LLMD in your area?

Regarding herxing on herbs and such, yes, definitely possible. I have herxed on all kinds of things. Herxing indicates toxins are being released into the body as bacteria die-off. You just need to learn how best to handle the herx. Sometimes backing off a little on the protocol will help and/or adding supplements and such that would help alleviate the symptoms.

All the best,

Jen

Re: Can natural substances cause a herx?

Well, the problem is that despite a strong history of being in lyme-infested areas (my Mom got lyme!) and being an outdoors person, I have NO recollection of a tick bite or bulls eye. So I am biding my time while the lyme tests are done (waiting for an Igenex kit to arrive this week) and trying to rule out everything else before I visit an LLMD who might jump to diagnose me without considering other possibilities. It could be that I have some other nasty critter (not sure what though). So I'm kind of in limbo- part of me just wants to get a lyme diagnosis based on the symptoms (hence attempting to confirm it with a herx), and part of me wants to proceed with caution before destroying my innards with antibiotics. Arrgh!

Re: Can natural substances cause a herx?

Just to let you know, I (along with a lot of other people) did not have a bullseye rash ... or any rash, and I continue to test positive for Lyme.

All the best!

Jen

Also, vectors other than ticks, such as biting flys, spiders, etc. also can carry the lyme bacterium.

Re: Can natural substances cause a herx?

Hi ac130,

I believe that I herxed (at least I think that's what it was) from both cat's claw and lumbrokinase.

Re: Can natural substances cause a herx?

All right, well I never did figure out if it was a herx, but I got tested for lyme following a week of grapefruit seed extract, and it came out positive!
Maybe it would've been positive anyway, but in case anyone's going for a test soon, it can't hurt to take some GSE beforehand =)
