australian from victoria with possible lymes?

Hey all, Ive been having a lot of trouble being diagnosed and have only recently started doing research about lymes disease. My doctor said i may have chronic fatigue but im not to convinced.
For the past 4 years ive worked in the landscape/gardening industry and have been bitten many times with many different rashes and bite marks (most times i never see what im bitten by), so for the last 7 months ive been trying to figure out whats wrong with myself. Here are some of my symptoms.

-constant mild headache
-sore watery eyes
-discomfort right side of face (jaw somtimes aches, sometimes saliver builds up in corner of right lip)
-poor brain function (memory, concentration, coordination, balance)
-out of focus vision
-fatigue
-weak heavy feeling in limbs
-depression and mood swings
-thristy/dry mouth
-muscle and join pain (which is dull but has inscreased lately)
-pain in feet/toes and knees (only started to feel these symptoms few days ago)

Im going to ask the doctor if i can get some tests done next week, hopefully it wont cost to much for the blood tests, this country is useless so we have to get the blood tests sent to usa (thats if the doc even cosiders my idea of lymes). Any inpout is much appreciated cheers!

Hi,

Probably better for you that your blood has to be sent to the US (unless you have a qualifying lyme lab there). Make sure it goes to Igenex Lab in Palo Alto California. You can contact them prior and have them send the kit and papers to you or your doc. Also, read the post "lyme newbies" at the top of this board about testing and other topics related to lyme.

Best,

Jen

Re: australian from victoria with possible lymes?

Hi,
I too am an Aussie who wondered if I had Lyme for ages with all of your symptoms and more. Came back positive this year and I'm now under treatment.
There is a private lab called Australian Biologics in Sydney that does up to date testing for Lyme. I had mine done there I believe it currently costs about $500 to test blood, urine and blood serum. I was positive from urine and then DNA sequenced too. My husband was positive with blood and my step father pos to syrum so we are grateful we tested all 3. My child came back neg, although had all symtoms so doc is treating anyway. She is now getting better as a result. Good luck!
cheers Lymefam

Re: australian from victoria with possible lymes?

Hi I am also an Australian (Sydney) with a 6 year old son who I am very worried has also contracted Lyme from me, possibly through my breastfeeding until he was 2 - I was having no "real" symptoms back then.

Who are you going through for the antibiotic treatment - I have been trying herbal treatments but having just gotten my IGENex tests back am hoping to start on antibiotics. I would really love to see someone here.

I am so annoyed at Australian Governments stance on this, I have travelled to the US and Europe so even though we "supposedly" don't have the right ticks here what happens to people like me who have been exposed to "American ticks". They don't seem to care do they.

I hope for all our sakes that they start recognising this as an issue so that more people in this country become aware of its existence and start preventative measures as well as a recognised treatment plan, can't believe such an advanced well developed nation is so backwards when it comes to Lyme disease.

Cheers
Dayna

Do you mind me asking Lymefam, what it is you are being treated with?

Re: australian from victoria with possible lymes?

Hi Lymefam, can i ask what doctor you saw for diagnosis, was it a doctor who was trained in lyme disease? did you get the tests done before or after seeing the doctor? Its good to know there is a lab in sydney. cheers.

Hi Dayna, I dont even know if i have this disease, yet i get annoyed that australians can suffer from somthing like this with little or no support from our own country. Also can i ask how much the IGENex tests set you back? CHeers!

Re: australian from victoria with possible lymes?

I actually found out I could have Lyme from watching today tonight and how similar symptoms were from what I was going through (there was a story on a few weeks back - I never realised how serious it can get). I actually sent her an email first outlining my symptoms and there was some correspondence before I committed to naturopathic treatment. Now I have my tests result so am hoping to start antibiotics soon, of course she'll have to diagnose me (results are mumbo jumbo but I see the word positive in there so ...) The problem will be getting my GP to authorise it as he still thinks it's the trauma of marriage breakdown blah blah.

The naturopathic stuff helps but I think you really need strong stuff to kill those little buggars. In my family there is just my son and I and it's him I worry about, his father is in Sydney but I have full care of him which is very hard at times especially when I worry about his health too (I breasfed till he was 2 thinking I was doing the best for him ) and looking after him while feeling crappy myself.

Good luck, I hope someone comes up with some magical pill sometime soon as every day is <worse>

Re: australian from victoria with possible lymes?

Wow, I was bitten by ticks multiple times in Qld as a teenager. I have been to Europe too. My children have been very sick and are under treatment and getting better.
I too, wonder if they 'got it from me'! However my youngest 2 were fine until 6 years ago. The Australian government and the Paeds I have visited said in utero transmission was not possible in Australia so they wouldn't even test my kids.
I wonder how we all got this as I was bitten by ticks more than 25 years ago and only started getting sick 8 years ago. I have family members and friends on the same time line of illness who cannot recall ever being bitten, let alone years ago.

I wonder whether we picked up Bartonella 8 years ago as this is easily spread by mozzies and explains a lot of our symptoms. It also is far more serious if you already have Lyme. This would make sense if Lyme has been around as long as some scientist claim. So co-infections, how many and what? Another thing which I wonder about is whether our immune systems can cope with one variety of Lyme until we continue to pick up more and more. There are lots of types which affect us differently and international travel spreads things more easily.

My doc is awesome, but wouldn't treat us for over a year and is not experienced treating children. We are lucky to have a doc willing to treat Lyme and he is so busy he will not take on new patients.

My son is 7 and his symptoms were skin rashes/hives which req antihistames around the clock for 4 years plus sore weak hands, sore stomach and knees, req heater packs nightly and severe refux, ringing in ears, memory probs etc.....all improving with antibiotics. Have managed to halve antihistames for the 1st time in 4 years.
All the best

Re: australian from victoria with possible lymes?

Hi Polespearer,
I live on the sunny coast in Australia. My doc brought up lyme as a possible diagnoses for my cronic fatigue, fibro, thyroid probs, joint probs etc etc. He would not treat me for a year just watching me for symptoms. He has done some overseas training but not all. He told me to get my blood tests from Australian biologic in Syd and to watch the movie 'under my skin'., My understanding is that homeopathics and herbs alone do not cure Lyme, you need everything together. we use antibiotics plus herbs together. I am also looking into Rife machines.

All the best
Lymefam

Re: australian from victoria with possible lymes?

Hi Dayna,
I am on plaquinel 2tabs am and pm this is an antimalarial which forces the Lyme out of cyst form. I also take minocycline daily which is able to cross the blood brain barrier and is I believe able to kill the inter cellular form of Lyme. I have taken bacterim before and clindamycin also and am about to start Azithromycin.
I also take herbs which I have heard of through other Lyme patients (which I revolve through )such as cats claw(lyme), Pau d'arco (for bartonella), sweet wormwood (babesia), boneset tea tincture (for babesia and Bartonella), Cryptolepis (for bartonella and babesia), teasel root tincture (help all med reach peripherals more effective to kill Lyme etc), Andrographis Paniculata(kills lyme, protects nerves anti inflamatory etc), grapefruit seed extract (natural cyst buster which must not be taken with doxy), black walnut tincture (anti parasitic), red root tincture (babesia and bartonella)and find them very powerful and things like sarsaparilla, french green clay, biofilam etc for detoxing from Lyme die off toxins. I am not a doctor or herbalist I just read a lot and share info with other Lyme patients and read the guidelines and suggested treatments from Lyme specialists.
regards Lymefam

Re: australian from victoria with possible lymes?

I sent mine to IGenex and yesterday sent my sons off, he is exhibiting signs . Bloody expensive business is this Lyme . My partner is also exhibiting signs but thinks I'm being silly & they are just stress & a soccer injury . Hope he's right.

Re: australian from victoria with possible lymes?

How are you going with your treatment lymefam? Am due to start Tindamax soon - not looking forward to that . Also have an appt on Saturday so will see what he says. Have to stay positive but it's soooo hard sometimes - the worst part will be treating my son while I'm in my own feeling crap
