Question Newly diagnosed with Lyme - Question regarding natural remedies

Hello.

My symptoms started years ago.
I was very active in taekwondo and worked full time in the accounting field. I started to get strange symptoms that doctors could not explain. I would get spots of tingling and numbness throughout my body. It didn't radiate down my leg but it was a circular area on my shin or my arm. I also had severe vertigo. To shorten this a bit I have gone severely down hill since that time. The tingling spots turned to stabbing pains and then back to widespread areas of tingling. I have severe muscle pains especially in my legs. I developed extreme fatigue often requiring 14-16 hours of sleep a day. I felt like I was literally sleeping my life away.

My memory has gotten progressively worse. I have bouts of issues with incontinence. It is not a problem that I have all the time which baffles doctors. It comes and goes and sometimes goes away for months at a time. I have terrible itching all over my body that comes and goes but comes more in the winter. I have had problems with heart palpitations for years that would come and go. They got to the point where they were ALL day every day and driving me insane. I used a halter monitor and they did extensive tests and everything came back normal. The cardiologist put me on a very low dose beta blocker that took care of the problem. I hate being on meds without a diagnosis but it fixes the problem. I have been treated for anxiety and depression. In August of last year (2011) I had an episode where I had 16 grand mal seizures. Diagnosed with seizure activity of unknown origin. I was so weak from that for two weeks I needed a wheelchair to get around. I gradually got my strength back. The neurologist wanted to keep me on seizure meds but without a diagnosis I refused. She wrote down that I was non-compliant and sent me on my way. I get very cold even though we keep our house at 70 degrees always. Besides my primary doc I have seen 4 neurologists, an infectious disease specialist, a sleep specialist (he did a sleep study that came back normal), a cardiologist, and a gynecologist. My diagnosis was always stress or depression and anxiety or my favorite we just don't know. My medical bills are astronomical and I do have insurance. I have been tested for everything under the sun including lupus and MS. ALL my tests come back normal except that my Vitamin D was low and I have a bulging disc in my lower back and two bulging discs in my neck from a car accident. I feel far from normal. OH and I have gained 60+ pounds in 2 years. I don't eat a lot of fatty sugary food. I don't ever eat at fast food places and I drink lots of water. My husband lost 30 pounds by watching his calories with his ipod app. I downloaded the same app and always were at my calorie mark or right under. I don't eat that much.

My primary doc suspected a thyroid problem a few times but it always comes back normal. I have a big family history of thyroid problems but in the case of my maternal grandmother and my aunt and uncle they had symptoms for years until it finally showed up on blood tests. By then their thyroid was so bad they had to have it removed.

I am finally taking some control back. I found an integrated medicine doctor that I went to see last week and she said I have classic symptoms of lyme disease and a thyroid problem. I didn't tell her that I had gotten bit by a tick a couple of years ago in Tennessee. My doc had treated me with antibiotics for a few days just in case so I didn't think anything of it. She also tested my thyroid activity and it was flat lined with little to no activity. She suspects I might have a thyroid autoimmune disease also such as hashimoto's which will not show in the standard tests.

The gist of it is I am taking a boat load of meds and therapies to rid myself of the lyme disease. It is making me uber sick. I don't mean a little bit but super uber lol. Gotta keep my sense of humor ya know. Anyway I found your board so I thought I would try this out to get any thoughts about whether my symptoms or story sounds familiar to anyone.

If you have read this far thanks and sorry for the huge ramble. It has been a loooong road for me so putting it all down here is a bit overwhelming.

I do have a couple of questions for you all here. My new doc is about the all natural approach. It is all new to me but I feel like my old docs were doing nothing for me so I don't know what else to do. She started me on a therapy program which I started yesterday. It consists of a cold laser and sounds waves. It is quite complicated and hard to explain. Then she had me do a foot detox. During the foot detox I got very sick. My heart started racing, I started shaking bad, got very thirsty and got a severe headache. They said it was all from the therapy releasing the lyme disease to get it out of my body. Since Friday I have been taking the following meds:

Dremamin 1 tablet 2x a day for adrenal support
Omega fatty acids 2 pills 1x a day
AuraLife multivitamin 3 pills 1x a day
Vitamin D 7,000iu liquid sublingual - 5,000 in morning, 2,000 at night
Borrelia Remedy 10 drops twice a day - homeopathic remedy with ledum and tincture of teasel
Transfer Factor LymPlus 1 a day for first week and 2 a day starting second week
Borrelogen 1 dropper 3x a day - herbal remedy to eliminate lyme
Life O Zyne Forte 1 tablet 3x a day - enzymes to remove biofilm and improve cap blood flow
Prescript Assist Pro 1 tablet 2x a day - Probiotic
NeuroAntiTox II Basic 1 dropper 3x a day - to remove toxins especially ammonia
Total Mercury (Homeopathic) 5 drops 1x a day - homeopathic with mercury detox and PCM-Rx

I am now feeling very sick which is supposed to be a "normal" reaction. My concern is if I in fact have lyme disease shouldn't I be on an antibiotic? Everything I am reading online states a person should be on an antibiotic for 6-8 months sometimes intravenously. Anyone have any experience the all natural route? Thanks for your time.

Re: Newly diagnosed with Lyme - Question regarding natural remedies

I to have chosen to go the same route as you. my story is a little different. as with everyone else i have always been on the better side of the health spectrum until april of this yr. out of the blue i had a heart attack. from the time i came home from the hospital all the symptoms started. I believed it to be reactions to the meds they had me on so i quit taking them. since stopping, most of them went away except the muscle tention, head buzzing, spuratic pains and sleep problems and general blah felling lack of energy. I have been seeing a chiropractor that also does nrt and kinesiology. after being blown off by my pc and my heart dr i entered into his nrt program. He has stated that i have lyme from his testing methods. he has me on 8 different supplements. i am also leary of not taking antibiotics for the same reasons as you. my pc did agree to have the lyme test done. i wont have the results of that til next week sometime. she stated that if it comes back pos that she wanted me to start amoxacillian for 3 wks. I don't know what i am going to do if i am one of the rare pos test results as i have heard so many stories of how the antibiotics didn't work only caused more problems, on the other hand have also heard how it has helped so many. SOOOOO, I am wondering if the treatment my dr nrt, art, kinesiologist, has me on will work. He seems confident that he will cure me so to speak. should i believe it is possible, or should i look elsewhere??? I am fortunatethat this has only appeared over the last 7 months and not years. i do recall having been bit by a spider while staying on our boat in june. no bullseye rash, but it was welted up and hot to touch, i wonder if that is where all this started. I am hoping someone can chime in and give us both the answer we are looking for. I also tend to lean torward the fact that my dr knows what i'm dealing with and can't imagine someone in his field of work would play with my life if he wasn't sure he could help

Many people choose alternative rather than abx (myself included). I did Salt/C with great results. You can also do abx with salt/C. Doing a lot of your own research will help you make an informed decision of what's best for you.

Yikes that sounds really scary. I'm glad that you made it through your heart attack. I will keep you updated on how my treatment goes. I go again on Tuesday to have multiple therapies again. I am scared because last Tuesday while they were using a cold laser on me and I was doing a foot detox I felt like I was going to die. It was a similar feeling that I had last year right before I had 16 grand mal seizures. Shaking severely, heart pounding, extreme thirst, and massive headache. Thankfully it went away after about 15 minutes and all I was left with was a massive headache. They did an energy therapy on me for 30 minutes afterwards and that took it down to a mild headache. Just wondering what is in store for me on Tuesday since I have been taking all these meds also for the last 2 weeks

I hope that everything works out for you and you start getting better. Take care.

Re: Newly diagnosed with Lyme - Question regarding natural remedies

To those of you included on this thread: your stories are similar to mine. Basically down the same road as you describes. Doctors thought I was crazy! I was so sick I wanted to die.
I found an llmd after exhausting every type of dr there was. I was tested they igenex and have lyme, Babesia, bartonella. My symptoms were very similar to those you posted.
I have been on abx for a year. They made me herx so bad at first it is indescribable. But I truly believe they have helped kill the infection. I also see a naturopath. She has me on an amazing natural protocol (supplements, drops, probiotics, etc).
I think the combo of abx and natural meds helped me heal.
I am by no means completely healed and I have some bad days, but I'm working again and am able to take care of my family again.
When I was at my worst my mother in law had to live with us. I couldn't walk, drive, and lost my short term memory. I was bedridden for three months. Today I can say I'm living again and happy to be alive again
It's up to you regarding type of treatment. I would research abx and natural methods and figure out what is beat for you.
I know people who can't tolerate the abx, but I haven't had problems being on them. I've been on over twelve different ones. My llmd is amazing and always gives me good advice about my treatment.
Best of luck figuring out your plan. Keep me posted!
Annalisa

Re: Newly diagnosed with Lyme - Question regarding natural remedies

Go with your Igenex results. I would start seeing a dr asap. It is horrible to let it go on day by day. If you can't find an llmd, a naturopathic dr would be able to help you. Do not let regular drs tell you nothing is wrong. The doctors I saw (in the hospital) and regular dr offices told me to "go home and eat protein." They also told me "to reevaluate my life because your test results show you are as perfect as a peach." Once I got to my llmd I got my bloodwork done thru Igenex. Finally I knew I wasn't crazy!
