Unhappy Symptoms but no diagnosis ... HELP!

Hi, I'm new to this group.

My apologies if my post is lengthy. But here goes...

I am 44 years old, and for the past year or so I began having severe night sweats with shivering. I went to my family dr who did some routine blood work and said nothing really showed, other than my white cells being elevated, and so he chalked it up to me likely being perimenopausal.

I was noticing my clothes were fitting more loosely and neighbours I would run into and people at work were continually telling me I looked like I was losing weight.

I was still having the drenching night sweats with the shivers, finally realized that perhaps I was having fevers, checked my temp one night after awaking with these night sweats, and sure enough I had a fever. I began taking my temp every time I had these sweats and every time I have a fever.

I began keeping track of my weight and sure enough the pounds were dropping. It was becoming fairly noticeable to the point my children, parents and spouse were commenting.

Went back to my family dr who repeated the blood work and again, nothing showed other than elevated white blood cells. He actually suggested that perhaps it was "psychological".

Finally got referred to a general medicine dr who did all sorts of blood work, and nothing showed up. The only thing that showed again, was that my white blood cells were elevated"slightly".

To date, in just under a year I have lost just under 25 pounds unintentionally. I am exhausted and have difficulty getting through the day, and it is getting worse.

The general medicine dr that I saw referred me to an internal medicine dr. He is stumped as to what is going on with me since none of my lymph nodes are enlarged.

The internal medicine dr I am now seeing is thinking that I may have leukemia. But, I recently had an MRI of my abdomen for severe recurring abdominal pain, but nothing showed, other than mesenteric nodes that are slightly enlarged which the radiologist believes were simply "reactive".

I now have to go for a bone scan on Monday and a gallium scan on Wednesday. Depending on what those show, the internist believes the next step will be a bone marrow aspiration/biopsy to rule leukemia out.

So, my question is, I was just wondering, anyone else here experience mostly normal blood work yet still got diagnosed with leukemia?

Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated.

Re: Symptoms but no diagnosis....HELP!

Please, please follow through on this! My 31 year old son had no symptoms other than a swollen lymph node on his neck. His tests were all clear- even a needle biopsy. His doctor was not satisfied with the results and performed an excisional biopsy. This determined he had Hodgkin's Lymphoma. So, please pursue this. He has had treatment and is doing well but I thank God everyday for the doctor who was not satisfied.

Re: Symptoms but no diagnosis....HELP!

Thank you so much for your reply.

I am sorry about your son's diagnosis, but glad that the Dr persisted with testing.

I plan on following through. I know it's possible to have leukemia and the cbc to be completely normal. That's why I was hoping to hear from others. Perhaps it happens more frequently than I had thought.

I know something is wrong with me. Hoping it's not cancer, but given the night sweats, recurring fevers and the on-going unintentional weight loss, it's quite possible it is leukemia. The internist more or less said so.

I am now experiencing, just this past week or so, a new symptom. I get short of breath very easily and get chest discomfort at times.

I can't believe how easily I get winded. Climbing stairs has become somewhat difficult.

First bone scan is tomorrow. Gallium study Wednesday. I see the specialist for follow-up on the 24th and I guess we go from there.
