my 6yr old daughter has had an enlarged lymph node since dec 1st.i've taken her to numerous doctors and a paediatrician has done blood tests-more for my sake really-which came back normal.he told me to go home and forget about the node-that was just before christmas.however,i'm getting scared again now thinking it's more sinister than that.help!i'm absolutely terrified.should i go back to a gp even though the paed.said i don't need to worry?

I don't know if I should be the one to respond to this, but, being a fellow worry-wart, I hate seeing your questions going unanswered. I've read a lot about lymphoma, and from what I read, it doesn't seem to strike children as young as your daughter. I also know of a person whose son had the same kind of enlarged lymph node problem. She took her then four-year old to the doctor, who like your doctor, told her not to worry. She did as he said and in four years time, the lymph node reduced in size and finally disappeared.

However, I can't say that your daughter's case is similar to his. Every one is different, hence each of our bodies respond and act in different ways.

Some questions to ask are:

Does your daughter have any symptoms associated with lymphoma (night sweats, chills, fever, etc.) accompanying her enlarged node?

Where is the node? How large is it? Is it firm/tender? Is it moveable? What is your family's history with cancer?

Often, we worry-warts are distrustful of doctors (and sometimes, with good reason), but our doctors do turn out to be right from time to time. We should keep in mind that they know more about the human body than we do. And more often than not, our self-diagnoses turn out to be wrong.

The best thing for you to do is to ask to be referred to a specialist (Try an ENT, or depending on the location/appearance, even a dermatologist). They can answer all your questions better than I, or any internet site, can.

I took my 5-1/2 year old daughter in to see our ENT to have her tonsils checked. They were fairly large. He checked her neck and pointed out that her lymph nodes were swollen, but said that was fairly common in kids and nothing to worry over. Adults with swollen lymph nodes; however, should be checked out.
