For at least two years now, I have had a swollen node on the back, right side of my neck, right below the hairline. It fluctuates in size often, but is on average the size of a bean.

I also have problems with chronic folliculitis of the scalp, in which I almost constantly have at least a couple of very painful, red bumps (follicles) on my scalp, usually on the back of my head. This has peristed for several years and I can't seem to get rid of it. Could this contribute to the swollen node on my neck for the past few years?

If a node has been swollen for several years, is it more, or less worrisom?

Usually if the condition persists over time over a year or more with out significant change, it is considered stable or not worrisome. If there are sudden rapid changes then it is time to get it checked out. If it is causing pain or other symptoms that could lead to infection it is time to get it checked out. Most of the time swollen nodes are indicating the body is doing its job. IF the node itself becomes sick, then the body is losing its battle against disease and needs medical help.
