Your doctor would definitely have to do the diagnosis, but generally lymphnodes do not have to be palpated to be found(mashed around). There is no accurate statistic on numbers of lumps that are serious and non-serious because it takes only one to be serious, but many people have non-serious swellings all the time that indicate a passing infection or virus.
People who have an immune compromised body such as HIV or anemia may have a higher chance of having a serious problem with lymph node swellings, but with people who have a good immune system, the lymph node that swells is simply doing its job to fight infection. That is where the doctor comes in to diagnose which it is and the doctor will consult with other experts if the doctor does not know for sure.
