does bone marrow biopsy hurt?

I had one in March, I asked my dr for something for the anxiety I had just thinking about it. It is very uncomfortable but once its over its over, kinda like having a baby, once you realize you will get through it it's over and you move on. It is a critical diagnostic procedure so you need to have it and I found the anxiety meds helped me.

hey lindsay,
everyone will have a different take on this. everyone can cope with different levels of pain. i was told how bad it would hurt and i was so scared to get it done but it didnt hurt. they numb the area and then all i felt was strange pressure. like when you get someone to lace up a corset and they have there foot on the bottom of your back to get it tight enough. i had a friend in with me who talked to me the whole time to distract me but i honestly didnt think it hurt.

I had mine done a number of years ago, and I have to say it was really painful. To the extent, that I have refused to have another one. However, I have heard it said that it is very dependent on the skill of the Dr who does it, and part of the reason I have refused one recently was because I know which Dr does them at my onc centre, and I have no faith in him.
So yes, it can be very painful, but that certainly does not always seem to be the case.

I had one done last October and I found it to be more of a strange hard pressure than to be painful. It is a little painful, but I would have another one if I needed to without being too nervous. It does depend on the skill of the doctor I have been told. I did take something to help with my anxiety beforehand and it helped. Good luck and I hope that helps. Carisa
