Swollen lymph nodes...lymphoma or hashimoto's thyroiditis

Hi everyone,
I have had swollen lymph nodes in my neck for over 4 weeks. I do not appear to have an infection and my lymph nodes remained swollen following antibiotic treatment. My CBC blood test came back normal and I have no symptoms of lymphoma other than weight lose of about 4lbs. My doctor ordered an ultrasound which came back showing multiple nodes in my neck and also symptoms suggestive of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (autoimmune disease that attacks the thyroid). Does anyone know if Hashimoto's thyroiditis can result in swollen lymph nodes or should I still be worried about lymphoma or other cancers. There are no nodes on my actual thyroid so it doesn't look like thyroid cancer. The nodes that I can feel are on both sides of my neck and are around 1-2cm in size. They are all firm but not rock hard and some of them are fixed in place while others are a little movable. I am waiting for an appointment with a specialist but I live in an under services area of Canada so that can take a long time. My doctor even personally called one of the specialists and I still don't even have an appointment scheduled after week of waiting. In the meantime I am in a very difficult position because I am planning to move to the US to get married and will have a period of time where I will have no health coverage. We are considering postponing the wedding to avoid a large loss of money for us and our guests who have to travel for the wedding if something is seriously wrong. Anyone know the chance of having lymphoma with normal CBC and no symptoms? Thank you so much for your advice and support!

Re: Swollen lymph nodes...lymphoma or hashimoto's thyroiditis

Hi,
I was just diagnosed in June with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Stage 1A, and had no symptoms other than a lump in my neck that slowly grew larger. I had an ultrasound, CT scan and needle biopsy that all proved negative last October. Doctor said keep an eye on it. After a couple rounds of antibiotics and steriods failed to improve the condition, I had the lump removed and confirmed as lymphoma. I hated the thought of surgery to my neck for what appeared to be a benign lump, but I hated worse the thought that I didn't know what it was and my research on the internet and talks with doctors did not assuage my concern.

Sooooo...my advice would be to not ignore it and get examined, tested and diagnosed as soon as you can.

You didn't say when your wedding is scheduled and when you are moving to the U.S.....if you do have something serious that needs treatment, you will want to be covered by some type of insurance, so the sooner you know what you have to deal with (or not!), the better you'll be able to decide on the wedding date, move, etc.

Hope this helps! Write back and let us know what you decide!
Mary

Re: Swollen lymph nodes...lymphoma or hashimoto's thyroiditis

Thank you for your reply. I went to the hospital to have a core biopsy but the doctor said the lymph nodes were too small to biopsy at this time and they would not be able to get enough tissue to diagnose anything. So I have to wait until they grow. As far as I can tell, they have remained the same size for the 2 months that I have noticed them. If they grow then I can get a biopsy done but in the meantime I guess I just have to watch and wait. Hopefully it's just a side effect of the Hashimoto's thyroiditis (which is what my endocrinologist thinks). Thanks again for your reply to my post!
