A little hypochondriac maybe, but worried at the moment.

Hi,

I'm currently suffering a bit of anxiety and have unpleasant suspicions that I may soon be diagnosed with Lymphoma. I'd like to share as many symptom and elements as I possibly can and hopefully you can either appease my worries or give me some sort of closure. Honestly, a "listen, it's likely you will be diagnosed with Lymphoma." would actually be somewhat relieving, much more than this constant stress of not knowing what is what.

- Had bloodtest in July. Came clean.
- Have an infected root canal in a molar (abscess in gum.. dentist said I need a retreatment) very recently. Haven't had retreatment yet.
- Two/three weeks, swollen lymph node above right clavicle. Not painful or hot or red or anything. It got a little more swollen and painful for one or two days recently. I don't know if it's because I poked it around. It went back down. It's the size of maybe an olive, or a little bigger. Maybe 1.5 olives.
- Have prior of acid reflux.
- Smoke hookah fairly regularly (not anymore starting with the panic attack I had today. Real wake up call. Getting my things together now.)
- Don't exercise much, but not overweight. Just average really. I'm 6'4 or 6'5 and 90kg.
- Lots of second hand smoke in our apartment (mom smokes cigarettes).
- Lots of stress from University, work, driving lessons, etc. Generally a stressed person.
- Doctor asked me to get blood tests (MONO and CBC) done and an echography of my neck. Blood tests probably tomorrow morning (Monday) and echography is on Thursday.
- Swollen right earlobe. Painful. This has happened often in the past but I never thought anything of it as it would disappear after a few days.

I'm not asking for a diagnosis to be honest, just insight. Thank you for your time.

Stress and the significant local infections will definitely cause lymph node issues like this. The tests are useful to investigate what is going on. The blood test should have indicated any cancer markers if they checked for those. To me, it sounds more like a local issue, but get everything checked. If the word "biopsy" is mentioned, or you start getting bad sweats, that is not good news. BTW, lymph nodes will swell and hurt if you don't leave them alone. Serah

I read that blood tests aren't an all-end answer to detecting Lymphoma. Not sure about Echographies though.

Should I specifically ask my doctor for a biopsy?

The blood tests your Dr recommended are good, as well as the ultrasound. I would ask for a chest xray too, with the smoking and second hand smoke. The blood tests, xray, and ultrasound may provide a clue, but if not, the size and location you descbribe may require a biopsy, which is the only absolute way to tell if no other explanation is found. Cat scratch disease can cause large nodes, and usually pop up 2-3 weeks after a cat scratch or bite. Be sure to mention that to Dr. if that history fits. Lymphoma usually causes night sweats, loss of appetite, fatigue, weight loss, sometimes fever, any or all, in addition to node enlargment. The nodes in lymphoma are not painful, so if painful, more likely to be an infection.

I am not a doctor but my understanding is that the only sure way to confirm or rule out lymphoma is via biopsy (to take out the lymph node; not a needle biopsy). Keep that in mind. While you go through this, consider trying a few things...

1. Trust in your doctor. Take whatever meds your doctor has given you. Schedule and undergo whatever tests your doctor is suggesting.
3. Stop smoking.
4. Get out of the apartment more away from that smoke. Maybe go for walks. You need to get exercise.
5. Don't drink alcohol if you do. Cut back on soft drinks if you drink them. Drink water.

I think you will feel better in 10 day even if you have some underlying condition. Let us know how things go.
