Because your hormone levels fluctuate greatly during perimenopause. Here's what nationally reknowned nutritionist, Ann Louise Gittleman has to say on this issue:
Quote:
Most doctors test only the levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). These hormone levels are elevated during menopause but rise and fall steeply during perimenopause. Thus, if you happen to be tested on a high-level day, the lab test result will suggest that you are menopausal [and if you are tested on a low-level day, the lab test will suggest your hormones are "normal"]. To get an accurate and usable hormone profile, you also need to be tested for levels of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. But, keep in mind that the levels of these three hormones fluctuate, too, so that a test on one day may yield very different results from another a week later.
The good news is that a less expensive, more convenient method is readily available: the saliva test. Your doctor may offer a saliva hormone test or you can take it on your own, in the privacy of your own home. The results from saliva tests tend to be more accurate than those from blood tests, particularly for progesterone.
About 95 percent of hormones are bound to proteins, forming particles too large to pass into saliva. Only 3 to 5 percent of a hormone is in a free, biologically active form-and this is what is measured in the saliva test. Fifteen years of research back the validity of saliva hormone tests, yet they are still new to clinical practice. Ask your physician to order the saliva test for you or you may order a saliva test without a physician's reference.
