Hormones and Saliva Testing - Menopause Message Board

I am 47 years old and have had perimenopausal symptoms for about ten years now. I'm talking like severe mood swings, anxiety, weight gain, depression, allergies, etc. and I am thinking of taking the saliva test which measures several hormones in your body. I have tried taking various herbs, vitamins, exercise, eating differenting, and other ways to feel better, but really nothing helping that much. We have a small pharmacy here in our town that is owned by a woman doctor who is very knowledgable about natural means for women. I talked with her at great length about the testing (by the way, is $150.00 and then the consultation is $75.00), so I will have to weight for a couple of paychecks before I do it. But she said its sounds like I'm estrogen dominant. She said estrogen dominance and lack of progesterone can actually cause asthma, which I was diagnosed having 2 years ago! She really was a wealth of information for me and I look forward to finding out what hormones I am lacking in or have abundance of. My question is for anyone who has actually done the saliva test and how has it helped or not helped them? Thanks so much!

I, myself, don't suffer from it but DID suffer (loudly, I might add

) from perimenopausal symptoms for nearly 10 years (my 40's in fact!) before finding relief with peri-zappers listed in the book, Before the Change by Ann Louise Gittleman.
She also recommends salivary hormone testing as the definite way to determine whether a woman is perimenopausal (even though, technically, the definition of perimenopause is irregular periods).
At any rate, it's wonderful that you have a local physician who is knowledgable in this area. It's all too rare!
