Don't let your doctors say you are too young for menopause...

I am 44 years old and "officially" in menopause. My GYN ( a woman) was very skeptical that I was in menopause, told me she thought I was too young, and that I was most likely still in perimenopause. Well, my test results came back clearly showing I was in menopause (FSH was 42.2). I have been having symptoms since I was about 38 years old, but this last year has really been the worst. So, please don't let your doctors dismiss your concerns if you are on the younger side and having menopausal symptoms. Insist on being taken seriously and change doctors (insurance permitting) if you don't feel you are. I have learned more from this board, and by doing my own reading and research about menopause then I have from my doctor!

Wink, you're right - I have heard of women much younger than you going through menopause! Doctors just don't seem to take this seriously for some reason. I am 51 and officially in menopause now. I had the test in March, and that verified it. I have learned alot on these boards too. They are great!

Re: Don't let your doctors say you are too young for menopause...

I was 50 when I got suddenly hit with bad peri symptoms which I believe was me actually making the transition from peri to actual meno. My dr. didn't want to say it was menopausal related b/c the symptoms weren't "common" - only until I started having hot flashes, did he say so. All of other horrible symptoms didn't trigger it for him. Oh, within a 9-mo. period, my FSH levels changed from normal to post-meno.

Re: Don't let your doctors say you are too young for menopause...

For some strange reason it seems like doctors want to consider peri/menopause as the last very last resort. It just adds to an already frustrating situation.

I have asked to have the hormone test, and the first thing he asks about is how regular my periods are. They are still regular, so he just dismisses any of the other symptoms I have.

I'm thankful for this board too. It's full of real life experiences, and who better to provide knowledge than someone who has lived it.

Re: Don't let your doctors say you are too young for menopause...

My doctor kept telling me that I'm too young for perimenopause too. I'm only 40 years old and for a while, I thought the same. There's no way I could be going thru this already! But after research, I'm convinced that I'm going thru perimenopause. Now we just have to control my irregular periods.
