It feels constantly like my throat is all clogged up when I swallow.
I had it about 5 mths ago and then it disappeared. A whole bunch of other symptoms drove me crazy over the last few months like tingling in the hands and feet, anxiety, headaches, nausea etc. This month, those all seem to have subsided and now I have this clogged throat thing again.
If someone else can reassure me that they've experienced this, I'll be able to push it to the back of my mind as just one more peri symptom rather than dwelling on it.
Problems with swallowing were the first indicator that I was in perimenopause. last summer. I felt like my throat was blocked and couldn't swallow and some days it was quite bad. I didn't have it for a few months and then had it again recently. So many strange symptoms come and go in this peri menopause that sometimes I don't know whether I am coming or going.
I did read that allergies can increase or develop for the first time during peri so maybe its related
I too have a clogged up throat also feels as if I have a lump there. I have lots of strange symptoms too. Tingling in left hand and foot, spots on my face as if I was a teenager, which I thought was an allergy. I am waiting for an ENT appointment at the moment, as I thought there maybe some underlying cause. Now I have read this I might cancel.
Pam- don't cancel your appointment with the ENT. It could be LPR or "laryngopharyngeal reflux". It is a form of acid reflux that damages the vocal cords. The primary symptom is a feeling of a lump in the throat. Do a general web search on "laryngopharengeal reflux" and many medical web sites will come up to give you information that may help you. LPR is usually treated by an ENT. It could also be a thyroid problem that an ENT could give you some good information/direction/referal to a specialist, to help you get treatment for that too. Of course it could just be hormone upsets also, but it's best to get it checked out.
I had my ENT appt on July 4.Before I went I started with a blocked ear and really sore throat, had 5 lots of antibiotics which didn't work. At ENT appt the consultant looked up my nose with a microscope. He didn't say much really except I am being admitted for day surgery on Aug 4 for a gromett putting in my ear to drain it as there is a bolckage but he doesn't know why. A biopsy of my nasopharynx and an endoscopy! So I will wait for the outcome, thanks for telling me not to cancel my ENT appt.
Pam, so glad you are receiving the treatment you need!!! Hopefully the ear drainage will help you and the discomfort will go away. An endoscopy will also help to determine if it could be related to acid reflux. The acid reflux board on this web site has been very helpful to me and is also a great resource of information.
I was diagnosed with LPR, due to a feeling of a lump in throat a little over two years ago. Sometimes it feels like my throat is coated with "peach fuzz", it is a very uncomfortable feeling. Most of the time it feels like there is a "tic tac" and sometimes a "golf ball" stuck in the back of my throat. The normal treatment for LPR is 2x a day of Nexium or another acid reducing drug. I took the nexium faithfully for over a year with little relief. I stopped taking the nexium because I was having some side effects about a year ago. Fortunately the throat discomfort has been slowly diminishing all by itself for about the past 6 months and now is almost completely gone.
I sometimes still wonder if it is not related to hormonal changes, as fluctuation in hormones can cause digestive problems, and thus causing the reflux. I guess I'll never know what it really is, I'm just glad it seems to be going away!
Best of luck with your treatment and keep me posted to your progress!
My appointment has been cancelled for tomorrow Aug 4. I have been told it could be September now. I have to ring on Monday to see if I can get an earlier appointment. This is what happens with The National Health Service!! Will let you know.
Wizard -- Hi:
I have had a problem with a clogged throat for sometime now. It seems to be at its worst in the morning as it wakes me up. It feels like a lump of glue in my throat which causes me to vommit. I find that boiling some water with a slice of lemon, and drinking it as hot as i can offers some relief, but does not cure the problem.
Are your symptoms similar?
I went to an ENT finally about the problem. He stuck a scope down my throat and found absolutely nothing wrong but said that the type of clogged up feeling I'm describing is often a result of acid reflux. He gave me a prescription for an acid reflux medication and it's totally resolved the problem.
I started with the clogged up throat problem about two years ago.....feels like I have a hairball in my throat! Anyway, after an endoscopy, a CT scan and a year on Nexium it finally went away on its own. About a month ago it came back again. I finally found out what it might be. It's a condition called Cricopharyngeal spasm. [removed]
P.S. Mine started at exactly the same time as all of the other peri problems started. Hmmm!

Why is it that as we get older we have to suffer such problems? lol I have the same problem...a feeling like there is something in my throat...a clog of some sort and it will feel scratchy or tickly and I try to cough to clear it out to no avail. My sinuses have been giving me fits as well which is pretty much all the time since like forever. I can't remember the last time I never had a stuffy nose or dripping sinuses. I've always been sniffling and then coughing. Sometimes I would do it and not even realize I am doing it until someone gets irritated with me and tells me to stop.
Come to think of it my boyfriend, who is 57, has the same problem. Seems to be worse after he eats and he is constantly trying to clear his throat.
I had this and suffered for over a year. I later found out that it was related to TMJ. Since I got a splint for my mouth, I have not had the blocked ear, the lump in my throat, or feeling of full sinuses. Check this out if the ENT doesn't do anything for you!
