BCP & the patch?

Ok, so after a couple of years on bcp taking the pills every day to stop all bleeding I started bleeding rather erratically with it sometimes lasting weeks. My doc thinks I just need a bit more estrogen to settle things down so I'm on a 5 week trial of a low dose patch to supplement the bcp.
If this doesn't work I'm told a hysterectomy is next.
Problem is the patch is making me nauseous almost all the time. Taking ginger and it's working a bit.
Just wondering if anyone else has tried this approach.
A bit scared of a hysterectomy. Is it considered minor surgery these days? What's the recovery period? Does it actually help with peri symptoms, other than the erratic bleeding?
Appreciate any advice.
Les
