Is this normal?

Hi everyone,

I've posted on Healthboards for a very long time, just never on this board.

I'll admit that I know nothing about Menopause...I'm in my late 30's and still have normal 28 day cycles.

I'm actually asking this question for me Sister...I told her to join the board and ask for herself, but she didn't want to do that so here I am.

She had her last period she THINKS in June of last year, but she also told me it might have been in December of last year...she said she can't remember

Anyway she called me tonight and told me that she started her period tonight.
So is it normal to go a year or a year and a half without a period and then just have one out of the blue?
I do know that irregular periods are one of the symptoms of menopause, but is it normal to go that long between periods when you're going through menopause?

She never goes to the Doctor and just assumed that she was in menopause since it had been so long since she'd had a period.

If it helps, she's 49.

Thanks for any answers or insight you can give me.

Yes, it is possible, especially at her age. Usually, you are considered to be out of perimenopause and into full menopause once you go a complete year with no period. There are many cases though where a woman can get a sudden surge in hormones and have a sudden, unexpected cycle.

Re: Is this normal?

Thanks so much for the help Wizard.
It makes me feel much better...I think I was more worried about it than she was!

She just started ( within the last couple of months ) to exercise more and eat better plus she's recently gotten out of a very stressful situation ( one she'd been living with for 14 years ).
Maybe that's what gave her hormones a kick.
