Urinary Frequency, could this be connected to the Menopause

For the last 3wks out of the blue I found myself constantly having to empty my bladder. At first I thought it was just a bit of an infection and started drinking lots of water and cranberry juice. However this didn't seem to do much and as I had no burning when I went to the loo I started to wonder if maybe it wasn't an infection after all.

Yesterday I finally plucked up courage to go visit my doctor. She did an internal and said my uterus and ovaries seemed fine, which was something I had been worrying about. She then did a dep test on my urine sample and at first she said all the results on it were normal. After a couple of minutes however she suddenly said there seemed to be a trace of blood showing on the strip

Now I have got myself in a right state about this, I am convinced I have something very very wrong as I've never had anything like this before. My doctor has sent the sample away to the lab and I have to phone back on Friday to see what the result is and if they find blood cells on the sample I have to go back for a repeat test and if that comes up the same I then have to be referred to a specialist to find out what is going on

The doctor did mention that it could be linked to the menopause and that as the lining of the uretha weakens as the levels of estrogen fall, it's possible to have a reading like this. I am 51 and haven't had a period for over 3yrs. I am just so worried right now I just can't think of anything else

Re: Urinary Frequency, could this be connected to the Menopause

Lynn,

I get this too, especially at night. I swear I get up 3-4 times a night to pee! At first I thought possible infection, but I tested clear. If you had a UTI your strip test would have showed other things as well. The trace blood could have been a fluke. Let us know what the doctor says.... but I'm here to tell you I have the frequency issue too.

Is there anything meno doesn't screw with?

I don't have urgency, infact I take a diuretic, as I retain fluid. But..for about a year or so, I leak when I cough or sneeze..not all the time, but most of the time. I have acid reflux problems and a chronic cough, so you can imagine. I did talk to Dr and could take a drug to stop it, but I have to get other things staightened out for now.

Re: Urinary Frequency, could this be connected to the Menopause

I've had this problem most of my adult life. I saw a urologist many years ago and they found I had polyps (benign growths) in my bladder and a small urethra. But I think frequent urination is a problem for peri and menopausal women and I've noticed that when I have the most side effects like insomnia, anxiety, etc. my urgency rate goes way up! (Like when I'm PMSing.) Try to stay calm until the test results come back. It could be nothing.

Thank you so much for your helpful responses. Well I phoned the doctors surgery on Friday afternoon and apparently the sample came back negative to blood cells, which was a huge relief.

Re: Urinary Frequency, could this be connected to the Menopause

The blood in your urine and the frequency of urination could be a sign of IC. This is harmless but irritating. I developed a case of it while going through peri. In fact, this happened several times.

I eliminated several things from my diet and the condition cleared.

You can look it up on the internet. There is a lot of information.
