Antidepressants for Night Sweats and HF?

Hey everyone,

I have a question. Last year I was having nightsweats and HF's to the point where I was hardly sleeping at night. Also I was so depressed that I felt like crying 24/7. I went to my GYN and told him that I had to do something because I couldn't stand being so depressed all the time and it was getting really bad. He took a blood test and of course it showed I was in Menopause - which I already knew. He knew I really wasn't wanting to go the hormone route, so he gave me Lexapro. I began to feel wonderful after just a couple of days (emotionally) and then also noticed that I wasn't having hot flashes or night sweats anymore. I have no idea how an antidepressant could make them go away - but it did. I got off the Lex and went on Wellbutrin and they returned. After several months, I added the Lex back along with the WB and they went away again.

Has anyone here found any other AD's that alleviated these symptoms?

Thanks for your input!

Re: Antidepressants for Night Sweats and HF?

The SSRI antidepressants, which includes Lexapro, work on serotonin levels, which do seem to have something to do with hot flashes. I don't think it's understood by the medical profession exactly how it all works, just that it seems to.

I have heard from a number of people that antidepressants are prescribed for a number of things, not just depression. Many people take the SSRI's for anxiety disorders and the tricyclic antidepressants are often prescribed at a very low dose for IBS and tension headaches

Thank you for your input, Ladies. I was wondering if anyone had found Prozac to help them with these symptoms too? I hear that Prozac doesn't make most people gain weight like Lexapro and some of the other SSRI's do.

Re: Antidepressants for Night Sweats and HF?

Had to jump in with my experience re: the SSRI antidepressant Effexor. Although it did balance out my moods and anxiety it actually caused night sweats (sweating is listed as a side effect) .Since i've been off of it ,.about 2mos now, I haven't had any night sweats (i'm 54 and in full blown menopause)

Also I gained 20lbs while on it and i'm slowly working it off.

I'm now on 5HTP 3 times a day (300mg total). I would consider an antidepressant as an absolute last resort, but then again ,some people might be at that point, just research it thoroughly first.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with Celexa? Does it help with peri symptoms like hot flashes and insomnia? What about problems with weight gain on Celexa? There are alot of AD's out there, each one with different benefits or problems. Thanks, Ann

I have been taking a very low dosage of Prozac (5 mg) for about a month, and have not been experiencing hot flashes (so far anyway).
