Feeling off Balance

Thank God I found this site. I was beginning to think I lost my mind. I'm 40 and have been experiencing irregular periods, mood swings, hot flashes, headaches, tingling sensations, tightness in neck and shoulders, joint pain, racing heart, change in body odor and the most disturbing to me is the off balance feeling I have. I feel like I'm walking on a boat that is being tossed around the ocean. I have never suffered from anxiety until now. I worry constantly that I have a serious illness.

I have been to the PC and do not have a thyroid problem, lyme disease, all blood work good, no neck or spine problems. I go for MRI next week. My PC who is a woman won't even entertain the menopause idea at this point. I go to the OBGYN in a few weeks for my annual.

My mom was on HRT at 36 so I guess this all makes sense. In retrospect I think my symptoms started about 3 years ago.

I have cut out caffine and high sugar foods, I'm trying to eat really healthy and get back to exercising regularly (which isn't easy since I feel lousy all the time).

Has anyone had any luck with supplements?

Re: Feeling off Balance

I understand about that off balanced feeling. Many months ago I dealt with the same symptom which had me feeling like I was leaning to one side. When I sat down I felt as if I'd slide right off the chair. I was able to alleviate this symptom by trying omega oil pills. This was suggested by someone on this board. If you do a search you might find the posts. It took about a couple of weeks before I noticed the change. Hopefully you'll get relief real soon.

Re: Feeling off Balance

It is a "relief"(yeah, I wish there was relief!!) to see that others have similar symptoms. This is how I described mine to the numerous doctors I have gone to....FEEL LIKE EQUILIBRIUM IS OFF, VERTICAL PRESSING DOWN OF FACE, PRESSURE TOP AND SIDES OF HEAD AT TIMES LIKE A VICE GRIP OR LIKE WEARING AN OLD FASHIONED BATHING CAP, VIBRATION IN HEAD, TWISTING /CRACKLING FEELING IN HEAD, FEEL LIKE I AM SHORT CURCUITING.

My weight is stable and I exercise almost every day. i have been to every kind of doctor I think...everything is "OK" so my primary doctor says menopause which from reading this board is "lucky" that he is willing to say that but I worry because at times this head stuff really interfers with my quality of life as I feel like I could keel over...initially I went to the emergency room last september with a near fainting that felt like a stroke or that i was shutting off.

I had a saliva test--showing stable estrogen, high progesterone, low DHEA...I was told to take DHEA every day for 3 weeks, then 3 times a week. I added Magnesium after reading here. What exactly are omega oil pills that I read about above?????

I basically feel the same, not as much pressure...I just feel PLAIN WEIRD AND NOT WELL....I havnet had my period since 6/27/06-I am 51...
Thanks for sharing and thanks for reading this!

Re: Feeling off Balance

I have just posted a new thread when I saw your message. I had the same thing three years ago and was diagnosed with Meniers disease. I now realise it must have been the onset of menopause, though I have never heard of these symptons before in connection with it.

Re: Feeling off Balance

Vitamens, supplements and exercise have helped me. Read the book called Before the Change by Anne Gittleman. She listed different vitamins, supplements and hormone cream for different symptoms. All of her suggestions have helped me with mood swings, bloating, heart racing, etc.

Re: Feeling off Balance

I could have written this thread!!

MarciB you describe exactly what I am going through....the off balance feeling. The only difference is I will b 40 this year. I have not been to a neurologist and wondered if you had. I have a lot of anxiety too, and often worry "this feeling" could be MS or something else. Have you had all that stuff ruled out?

My symptoms started April of this year, and I have a laundry list of them, but by far the worst is the balance--head pressure--almost vertigo--motion--tilted feeling.

Thanks for writing. I am glad I can come here to vent about my sypmtoms, and find others going through the same thing.

Thanks for your replies.

Re: Feeling off Balance

I do feel MOST of the time like this is perimenopause but ALOT! of the time I continue to be concerned that "they" (the Drs) have missed something--I just do not see everyone else walking around "looking" like they just dont feel well especially with the dizzy/balance issues.
Yes...I went to a neurologist...I even went to a ear specialist specializing in balance issues and went through 2 hours of testing--of course I felt WELL on that day!...I have found that they quickly want to say you are depressed and/or they are substituting depression type medications for HRT. I have nothing against those that have decided to use them and I have read here that they have been a lifesaver but my symptoms are not in that direction.
I resented the one doctor in particular who recommened this and gave me a brochure on dizziness and depression AFTER HAVING SPENT EXACTLY 5 minutes with me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had an MRI as my brother passed at 46 of a Glioblastoma Brain tumor 3 years ago and they ruled that out along with MS.
As I type this, I feel nauseaus and have alot of pressure on the sides of my head today. I have a little bit of a period which started this morning-the first in 3 months. Has anyone else had the symptom where you feel as if a rubber band snapped in your head????---that has happened to me several times and I am good for nothing for a couple of hours after this...I did read that symptom [removed] where they list MANY symtoms other than the "usual" we read about.

Any additional suggestions would be appreciated
Thanks to all for reading!
