Heart Palps...SCARY! Need some reassurance

Hi Ladies,

I post here less often now because I am in menopause (at age 46) and most of my symptoms have subsided. But today at work I had an "episode" that scared the heck out of me!!! So I need your wonderful reassurance so that all that anxiety doesn't kick in again.

Heart palpitations like crazy, shaky all over, a bit nauseous, a bit dizzy, cold chills(really strong cold chills)...it all hit me like bomb and has been going on now for over an hour. The heart palps are not extreme, but very noticeable. I don't have any chest pain and I know my heart is OK because I've had it checked out in the past when peri first hit. But man I feel terrible and scared.

Can anyone share some reassurrance? Just when I thought that the worst was behind me I get a day like this!!! My lunch hour is almost over and I work with students all day so I can't "hide out".

Help!

Thanks,

Wink.

Re: Heart Palps...SCARY! Need some reassurance

Hi Wink

The first time I got a heart palp, I was out shopping. It was awful. I had to leave the store and get home. I didn't have any pain either. I also got a bit dizzy and nauseous and very warm - (maybe a hot flash?).
I'm 48 and began my peri-sypmtoms about 2 years ago. I haven't had a heart palp since last winter - I remeber because I had a heavy winter coat on in the store, and had to remove it quickly, or I thought I would pass out. Ever since, I always took my coat off while shopping - then over the spring and summer - no coat - no heart palps, so I wonder if I was getting too warm/ or having a hot flash and over heating? Winter just started again, so I wonder if I'll start them again?
Over the warm summer months, I didn't get the palps or hot flashes - hard to figure this out sometimes.

Hope this helps,

Mary

PS - I did get an EKG last August, so I know my heart's OK.

I have had those episodes too. I take Tenormin, but I still have palps everyday, some days worse. I don't have alot a hot flashes, but I think I get the irregular heartbeat episodes instead. Did you take any different meds today that could have brought it on too? Cold medicine really sets my heart off at times. The only thing that helps me is to take a Xanax and try to relax. It usually settles down in a couple of hours. It is very scary I know, but I have had the problem for years now and all the heart tests show nothing serious. Changing hormones can screw up so many things. Good luck.

Sounds like you had a hormone surge to me. I often get palps and chills at the same time. I also get the nausea out of the blue. Usually it is around the time of ovulation. I am 45 and still have my periods. Maybe your hormones just kicked in for some reason. How long have you been without your periods? Maybe it was just one last surge for you. Hope your feeling better now. T.

Have you had your Thyroid checked? Hot flashes can be confused with hyperthyroidism.

symptoms include

heart palpitations, pounding, raceing
hot flashes
hair loss
eye problems dry eye or excess tear production
fatigue
mense difficulties

Re: Heart Palps...SCARY! Need some reassurance

Hi Ladies,

Thanks for your replies, the support really helps. I felt better last night and feel OK this morning. I have had my thyroid checked, and it's normal. I believe it was a "hormone surge" as roland92 suggested. I haven't had a period for well over 2 years now and for the most part I feel pretty good. But every now and then I just have one of those days where everything just goes crazy and I have to remind myself that it's hormonal and that it will pass and I'll be OK. I also had slacked off on taking my magnesium/calcium and I think that combo really helps with the heart palps.

Thanks again for your support!

Wink.
