What will happen if I stop bc pills? - Menopause Message Board

Hi all. I've posted on a few topics and I'm currently awaiting MRI results to check the status of large fibroids which may be causing my severe lower back pain. My former ob/gyn (just started seeing a new dr.) found them about 3 years ago and by then they were already grapefruit sized. When I asked how long they had been there (I've seen this dr. every 6 months since I was 19) he apologized and said he just missed them. His partner, whom I had to see in his absence, sent me for the ultrasound that confirmed them. So anyway, he said I needed a hysterectomy. Last month, I finally went to my daughter's dr. for a 2nd opinion and this dr. was the one who suggested a possible Uterine Artery Embolization instead of a Hyst., depending upon what the MRI shows. One of my main concerns is that my old dr. has had me on low dose bc pills for probably 15 years but I really want to stop taking them as I don't want to risk the hormones at my age (I just turned 50). My question is this, what will happen if I just stop taking them? I don't want to risk HRT but what are the odds that I could get pregnant? Could I even get pregnant with these fibroids? I've been on pills for so long but I just think I should let my body do whatever it's ready to do. I'm assuming I should be menopausal by now but I'll never know if I keep taking these pills, right?

I was on BCP for 9 months due to heavy bleeding and ovarian cysts. It worked great for those two problems. Since I stopped it in Nov. I have had two fairly normal periods. Not a heavy flow like before so I am hopeful those days gone thanks to the pill. But, the other peri symptoms are TERRIBLE! I still had some of them while on the pill, but I guess I didn't realize how good I had it. Now the palps are off the chart and so many more miseries. Hopefully my hormones will straighten out soon. I would like to let nature take it's course, but this is tough. I hope you have better luck than I did. But I agree with you, after 50 it's probably better to stop the pill. I am 52. This time of life is such a pain. It would be nice to feel good again. Ann

I'm in the same boat as you guys are. Especially you Ann. You could be me. I also was on the pill for flooding ,pms symptoms etc and decided to stop at age 53 to see where was body was. Well ,I'm right back where I was. I'm 55 now and still having fairly reg periods ,pms big time ,although bleeding isn't quite so heavy. I agree that I didn't know how good I had it . I don't want to go back on them at this late stage. I just keep hoping I'll hit menopause,and be done! Kind of wish I had stayed on them though.
As far as getting pregnant ricebeanz,anything is possible. You need to talk to your Dr. I don't think it's very probable though because even though we are still having periods we are not manufacturing a lot of eggs so I don't think we're very fertile. Don't take my word for it though. Kat
