Special Ultrasound Test - Menopause Message Board

I have been in menopause for one year and then had 2 periods. I had an ultrasound today and now they want to do a histoultrasound?? to check to see why endometrial lining is not smooth. The NP said it may be polyps which are usually benign. I should have asked more questions. What do they do if it is polyps and what else could it be. The Pap came back fine.

I don't know if this is what you are having, but I had a saline sonohysterogram, after a regular ultrasound showed either a thickened lining or polyps, they couldn't tell. The test was simple, didn't even have to drink all that water or anything. As a precaution (though they didn't tell me) I took a couple of Advil beforehand because they did say I might experience a bit of cramping. What they do is put a probe in your vaginal opening, then open the cervix and squirt some saline solution into the uterus. That's the part where you might feel a little crampy. I felt it for about 5 seconds, then it went away. The test was over in less than 10 minutes, so not a big deal. Don't worry. Mine turned out to be polyps which they removed during a hysteroscopy. Most polyps are benign and they may or may not want to remove them. I wanted them removed for peace of mind.

Yes, that is the name of the test! Thank you for the information and I will remember to take the Advil. Where was the hysteroscopy done? Did it require that you miss work? Thanks.

It was done at a regular imaging center - like where you would go to get a regular ultrasound or x-ray. Yeah, you could go to work right after - mine was done in late afternoon so I didn't. The one thing I do remember was I had a lot of gas pains in the evening. Maybe that was just me because I did alot of reading about it beforehand and didn't hear others say they had them. Good Luck!

Wait, I just re-read your question asking about the hysteroscopy. That is different from the hysterosonogram. Are you asking about the hysterosonogram or hysteroscopy? I already explained about the sonogram, but if you're asking about hysteroscopy, that is different. I did have a hysteroscopy to actually remove the polyps. That was done in an outpatient surgery and I did miss that day of work as I had general anesthesia.
