How many times a night do you go to the toilet? 1? 2? 3?

Might seem like a silly question, but I mentioned to my sister in law I usually go twice a night. She is 63 and never goes, and she's had 3 kids!! Am I unusual? I thought most women my age (54) would go once.

It drives me mad, as I go to bed about 10.30 and by 1 ish I'm up first time, and then again about 4 ish, and then I sleep till the alarm goes at 6.45a.m. During the day I don't have this problem at all. Maybe that's where I go wrong.

Some nights I go to sleep about 11p.m. and by 12.30 I wake up with a full bladder bursting to go. I've tried no drinking after 5 ish and all sorts of things, but at nights my bladder simply likes to keep me awake it seems.

I'm sure that's why I often feel so tired in the mornings.

What's it like for others out there??

Jude

Re: How many times a night do you go to the toilet? 1? 2? 3?

I'm 53 and have been going through the menopause for the last 6yrs. I hardly ever get up to go to the loo in the night and never have. However my other half will usually get up about twice every night and he has done for years. My son is only 30 and he gets up every night too! I've got a few female friends in their 30's and 40's who aren't menopausal and they also get up during the night to use the loo.

I actually drink quite a big glass of water before I go to bed and it still doesn't make me feel I need to go so I'm just guessing we are all different and some people have to get up during the night more. It's funny as I do seem to go quite often during the daytime, but then again I think I drink a lot of water in the daytime so I guess that is why.

Jude, I am like you, I get up 2-3 times a night and it drives be nuts. I had to have a bladder suspension years ago, so maybe it time to do it again. I go a lot during the day too. I think it is every two hours...

Re: How many times a night do you go to the toilet? 1? 2? 3?

Hello All:* I never had any problems in my younger days "holding my water" so to speak. I now visit the bathroom 2 -3 times during the night.* I think the primary reason is that I drink lots of water, all day and all evening. I really have to because I take medications that cause constipation and fluid intake is very important, if I don't want to be spending hours in that room for other reasons. LOL What has become a huge issue for me though, is the tendancy to "leak" when I cough or sneeze or laugh. It has become second nature for me to cross my legs and brace myself when I feel a sneeze coming. Those ones that sneak up on you can be dangerous! My GYN says he doesn't see any significant drop in my bladder, so at least I know it's not that.
Have a good day all....cmpgirl

What is a bladder suspension?? Never heard of it.

I don't think I've got a problem either, as during the day I have no problems. In fact I think I don't go often enough which could contribute to why I go at night so often.

But of course as I said erlier it wakes me up, and I always seem to wake up feeling tired. 'Aint growin old fun!!!!!'

Well Jude, I'm with you girl, I get up 2-3 times a night. I try and not drink much after 6pm but doesn't seem to matter. But then again during the day I go every couple hours at least. Been that way for a few years now. Sure does make a person tired the next day.

Re: How many times a night do you go to the toilet? 1? 2? 3?

Jude, that is about my schedule too. I tend to drink alot of water in the evening and to cut down on my fluids would be torture. Then again, waking up having to go and then laying there trying to ignore the need because I don't want to disturb my chihuahuas who will all get up and follow to see where I go and then that wakes up hubby.
Then another hot flash hits me so I have to throw off the covers anyway so I might as well get up.
Isn't getting older just a hoot?

Jude, a bladder suspension is where they tie up the bladder because it has "dropped" or fallen a bit and is pressing on other organs such as the uterus. When this happens it can cause frequent urination, dribbles(from laughing or sneezing), accidents or infections. I had all these problems, but the main one was the infections. Once I had this done, I had no problems for years...but they say this will probably have to be done again. A lot of times if a woman is having a hysterectomy they will do the susp. at the same time. I am now in the time of my life where I am experiencing everything except the infections once again. I too, drink lots of water during the day and don't want to "limit" myself in the evening, so I pay the price by going all day long and getting up all hours of the night. Grrrrrrr...

Yes I had a hysterectomy 10 years ago and they did the bladder suspension, though I didn't know they planned to do it. I didn't have issues before it but after is when I noticed having to go more often. Oh well, what ya gonna do? Julie

Re: How many times a night do you go to the toilet? 1? 2? 3?

I used to get up 3-4 times a night. I thought it was just because of peri-menopause. Turns out it was sleep apnea! Apparently every time your heart beats, your body makes urine. The fast beat that was produced when I was starved for air, was causing me to have to wake up and use the bathroom. Now that I'm being treated for that, I'll sometimes get up once a night. Sometimes I don't get up at all. Always mention it to your doctor though, perhaps they can put you on an overactive bladder med that will make it easier for your body to ignore the urge during the night!
