Hello ladies. I have had quite a scary crazy last 2 weeks. Went to see a specialist that one of my regular docs wanted me to see, 2 weeks ago. Never had any problems with nervousness or white coat syndrome in my life, but when the nurse took my BP it was off the charts. It remained that way until I finally got in to see my primary doc this past Monday. He immediately put me on BP meds and we are still working out the dose as my pressure is coming down, but very slowly. It is still higher than safe levels.
Some labwork has come back and more is being done, but my thyroid is elevated. I don't know the levels exactly, but will find out when I see him again next week. He is saying that it may be the reason my BP is so high or the elevated BP could be causing the thyroid elevation. Either way he is considering the possibility that both may be due to peri.
Have any of you suddenly developed Thyroid issues during peri or meno? If so, what was done or how was it treated? Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, cmpgirl
Re: Anyone have hperthyroid pop up during peri/meno?
cmpgirl,
20 years ago, at the age of 39, when I started having symptoms of peri, the doctor gave me a test to measure my thyroid levels as well as my hormone levels. It was known then that the symptoms of thyroid unbalance mimicks the symptoms of peri. I'm sorry I can't give you more info than that, as my tests indicated that I was "blessed" with peri rather than thyroid problems.
Re: Anyone have hperthyroid pop up during peri/meno?
Hi cmpgirl, Sorry to hear about what you are going through. I'm sure they will get it under control for you soon. It is not uncommon for women entering menopause to also have thyroid problems. My Dr. is currently watching my thyroid issues and I am taking some natural supplements to see if we can control it that way. Hope that helps,
Julie
Re: Anyone have hperthyroid pop up during peri/meno?
Thanks ladies: My thyroid hadn't been tested for several years. I think the last time was in my mid twenties. After the doc told me there was some elevation, I started searching the web for symptoms, etc and I have almost all of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism. So many were like those found during peri and meno that I had just chalked it up to that. Never susppected the thyroid or the blood pressure.
I C Hot, I'd love to know about natural supplements. If my issues aren't serious enough to warrent "killing" the thyroid, and can be managed by something natural I would much prefer that.
Don't you just love being a woman? I swear, if men went through half of what we do, they would have found a magic pill or something to make meno a thing of the past!
Thanks again and I'll let you know what the doc says, cmpgirl
Re: Anyone have hperthyroid pop up during peri/meno?
I agree, if this was men going thru it they would have that magic pill by now. I go to a naturpathic Dr. so that is how I get my natural supplements for Thyroid. <removed> I hope you find something that helps without having to resort to med's.

Re: Anyone have hperthyroid pop up during peri/meno?
Hey Julie: I should be hearing from my doc tomorrow (well, today technically) as to my labs. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. It seems there is something going on, but I am getting nervous, not knowing just what. At least the BP meds he prescribed are starting to do their job. My diastolic was only double digits for the first time in 3 weeks. I know it's not always possible, but I would love to be able to get back to my usual BP of 120/70. I guess I just have to be patient and pray.

Take care and hang in there, cmpgirl

Re: Anyone have hperthyroid pop up during peri/meno?
Hey cmpgirl,
I am saying a prayer for you too. I hope you get great news today. Be patient, you just never know, maybe those numbers will come back to the 120/70. Take care,
Julie
Re: Anyone have hperthyroid pop up during peri/meno?
Well, my primary's nurse called today and this time, the labs done in their office, showed no elevation in the thyroid. I asked her if it was common to get a such differing results and she said that it was, due to fluctuations etc.
They have not received the results from my other labs yet. My BP is still coming down slowly, one or two points at a time, but there is still some significant swelling in my feet and ankles. They told me if that hasn't resolved by the time I come back in (2 weeks), he will probably put me on a diauretic (sp?) as well. (Like I don't run to the bathroom enough now! LOL)
So, I'm still just hanging in there and waiting. Our medical system is such a crazy game of wait and see. It would be so much better if you could just get your questions answered when you go. But it's always take this test, and try this pill......Sorry for the vent. I'm just having a frustrating day.
Thanks again for the kind words and the support. I really am thankful that these boards exist. Take care, cmpgirl
