Does the age of first period have any bearing on menopause??

Someone once told me that the younger you are when you get your period, the older you will be when you go through menopause. Has anyone heard this before? I am wondering if it is true. I started my period at age 12 and think I started peri a few months ago at age 43. Please post how old you were when you first started your period and how old you are/were when you finished meno. Thanks!

Re: Does the age of first period have any bearing on menopause??

Thanks for your replies ladies. bethsheba- You poor thing to have had your period for so long! Your stats would go along with the early period/late meno theory! But then I read Debtone's response and that is funny that you started everything earlier than your Mum and Sister! I am interested to hear what others say about their age's, just to see if there is any pattern to this!

Thanks, LMF...I think I could have built a mansion with the money I spent on tampons and ruined clothes, ...but really, other than staining, I really had no problems with my period so I guess, I was lucky.

Never heard of your theory before, by the way. Am interested in learning the results!

I got my first period when I was 13. Now at 51 I am not sure if I have had my last period yet, but they have been few this year.

Re: Does the age of first period have any bearing on menopause??

So far it seems as if most people start their period at 13 and end by early 50's. (Pretty average so far!) Not much data to go by, but still interesting info. Thanks for the replies you ladies have added thus far!

Re: Does the age of first period have any bearing on menopause??

LMF,

It just came to me but, I believe it was in school, that I read that women near the equator (in Mexico or Cental America for instance) get their periods earlier in life (preteens)and women near the poles (like in Alaska) get their periods later in life (late teens). Just a few more things to think about.

Re: Does the age of first period have any bearing on menopause??

Interesting info Bethsheba- I had never heard that one before! I just looked up the early menstruation/late menopause theory and one article said that early menopause (after age 40 but before age 48) was increased by late menarche (having started late with the first menstruation). I am sure there are different theories no matter where you look!

Re: Does the age of first period have any bearing on menopause??

Interesting indeed!

My mom started late (17 I believe) and didn't stop until 54 or 55.

Here I am at 53 still cycling and I started at 13!

It's not fair!

Re: Does the age of first period have any bearing on menopause??

Started periods at 15 -

Hysterectomy, but ovaries left IN -- at age 38 -- so no more periods.

Obvious other menopausal symptoms started at age 44-45 (severe hot flashes, night sweats, migraines, burning tongue, weight gain, -- you name it, I had it). The symptoms continued for more than 5 years and I STILL, at 60, have occasional breast tenderness, night sweats, etc.

Some women have menopausal symptoms into their eighties, by the way. Bah!
