Re: post menopause quistions?

I have learned a little bit about hormones as I am a 2.5yr survivor of hormone positive breast cancer I had my ovaries removed at 48 (now 50) as a precaution, and I was no where near menopause. The side effects are rough with instant menopause.

For ladies that can't take hormones, there are several nonhormone rxs that can help symptoms.

For mood symptoms, iv'e read a low dose of antidepressant such as zoloft or celexa can help. For hot flashes and sweats, nuerontin or effexor work well for many women. Some use evening primrose. Black cohosh works well, but it is controversial as to whether it has estrogen properties or not and how it affects the breast.

Exercise, vit D, magnesium and calcium can help to keep bones strong. Some people may be advised to go on the biophosphonates like fosomax if their bone density is low.

I assume when you did the hyst, you had your ovaries removed as well?
I would assume your Dr. may want to wean you as a precaution against breast cancer.

I tried nuerontin for awhile, but it made me very dizzy, although helped the hot flashes. Recently, I did decide to try black cohosh, just for a couple of mths, as I am tired of suffering with hot flashes. - This has helped alot and it is wonderful to feel so much better.
