Question Intestinal issues

Hi
This is my first time on this board. I had a rough couple of days and would like to know if anyone else has had similar problems.

I am 55 and just past my year with no period. Then Tuesday night I started with intestinal issues that resembled IBS and problems like I used to have before or mid month when I had regular periods and during perimenopause. This lasted until Thursday. Then Friday morning, I noticed a vaginal discharge like my periods before my year without. I had scheduled an appointment with a colon rectal specialist before this new twist. He spent less than 5 minutes with me and gave me a prescription for Cipro for his quick dx of diverticulitis. I asked him if it could be menopause related but he quickly dismissed that idea with no further discussion. I wish I would have gone to my Gyn. because now I really feel this is hormone/endometriosis related. I also realized that I have not been having "flashes" these last few weeks so it is like I may be starting my year all over again. There are just some things you know about your own body.

The discharge has let up and the intestinal pains are gone but I will see my GYN if I spot again and may cancel the colon rectal specialist.

Has anyone else had IBS like problems they could relate to hormones either before or after menopause?

Thanks
Judi

Re: Intestinal issues

Welcome to the boards, nativepa,

I have seen similar problems on other boards (and there are similar posts here)...although your reproductive cycle may be affected, I doubt your symptoms have litttle to do with the change of life (other than they may get worse at this time).

What's significant about your post is that you apparently had recurring problems before or mid monthprior to peri/menopause...what is even more significant is that your symptoms abated after taking Cipro! I do not think this is a coincidence! It is possible that you have an undiagnosed bacterial infection going on (and yes, some can cause "hot flashes", IBS, and other female problems) and the Cipro may have temporarily helped. I say temporarily because some infections take longer than others to knock out.

I would advise taking daily notes as to what is happening to your body. It is very possible that your symptoms will change/worsen with time and if that is the case, a detailed record of what happens may helpful in your diagnosis.

Is it safe to say you live in Pennsyvania? It may be relevent if you do.
