Post Mood swings

I am 45, basically fit and healthy but I tihnk I"m becoming pre menopausal, certainly my hormones seem to fluctuate. For a while there I was getting ultra sore boobs for a good 2 weeks every month. Then that stopeed. The last two months I've had much heavier bleeding than normal on my heavy day - 2 days but that tails right off. But the worst I reckon is my moods swings. I normally train quite diligently - I run and go to the gym. I try to do 40-60 kms a week. But I find I just keep falling in a totally unmotivated hole for 1-2 weeks at a time so my training goes from 40-50 kms to 15 in one foul swoop. I might run 1-2 times a week for two weeks and go to the gym 1-2 times instead of my normal 4-5 times. Then I pull myself together and get going again till next time. I want to lose bodyfat so all this isn't helping becuase my motivation to diet goes too. Not that I"m fat but I've put on a stone over the last year or so - most round my middle like 5 inches of it! Has anyone been throguh similar things and what do you find helps (beside a kick up the bum). I"m not on any birth control/hormones.

I'm 21 and have been post menopausal for a yaer and a half due to a complete hysterectomy. Not a whole lotin common i suppose. However, if you are not on any birth control or horomones, maybe you need to be. No huge does or anything, maybe even a quarter dose will help. But with horomones and birth control comes weight gain, if you want to keep your menopause under control before you get completely out of wack like I am, KEEP EXCERSIZING!! It helps with hot flashes obviouse weight gain.

Thanks for the comments. I was on the pill from 18 - about 36, part of the reason I stopped was becuase my cervix was rebelling - I was getting erosion problems. But apart from that, yes it kept a lot of other things under control. I'd have to think long and hard as to whether I'd go back to it - maybe if my periods get worse I might. Funny this month seems to be a sore boob month, last couple have been good. And you are definitely right about the exercise. I have a run scheduled at least for the next two days with a friend - hopefully that will get me on the straight and narrow again for a while!

Mood swings in perimenopause usually refer to you being fine one minute and the next minute you are ready to bite someones head off. I would consider checking in with the doc about the sore breasts and lack of motivation/energy to make sure there is no physical cause for this. It could very well be perimenopause but it still deserves to be checked out.

I did check in with the doc about the boobs. Her only solution was to suggest going back on the pill. That was a while back. I'm assuming the energy/motivation bit is hormonal since it comes and goes. If it were something like iron I'd know. However it is probably time I went back and saw her if only to get a routine type of check as I haven't had one for a while.

I did run this morning and I am being conned into doing touch rugby - maybe that will give me the added motivation to work my way through all this. Not quite sure what they'll think about an old fart turning up though! :-)
