help - ankle swelling

Hi,

I'm really freaking out here. I drank coffee, did some progesterone cream and was taking excederin pm to sleep - well, my body turned against me and my ankles swelled up. I quit doing all 3 and the swelling went away. I attributed it to water retention and looked it up and all 3 cause retention.

Ok, so yesterday, I drank the equivalent of 2 cups of coffee and took excederin lastnight to sleep - the first for both in awhile and my ankles are swollen this morning! No cream and only taking both once.

Now, I may have had a little too much salt intake yesterday too - chinese and then frozen pizza for dinner.

Does our bodies change that much when we are going through the change of life? Anyone else go through this? I am assuming that the swelling will go down, but I am just anxious as all get out.

Thank you in advance

Re: help - ankle swelling

I did a search on here and think I answered my own question. I guess it can be normal, to watch your salt intake but to also check with your Dr to be sure you are healthy for the heart....

Hi

Definitely watch your sodium intake, it will cause you to swell. Our bodies are changing quickly and some of the side effects can be very scary! Try to stay off your feet when that happens. Lay down and put a pillow underneath your legs so they are elevated above your heart (sleep like that too, it will help).

We also retain water right before our period starts so that might be a thought. Keep a journal of when it happens and it might tell you why it may be happening. Swollen ankles can be a sign of congestive heart failure, but I am sure it's probably due to something you were doing.

Hang in there and try not to let it get you down!!

Missy

Re: help - ankle swelling

Thanks Missy - boy I hope it's not congestive heart failure - I'm only 39 - although over weight, I am in pretty good health. At least my cholesterol and other blood work says I am..haha - that still scares me alittle though...I woke up this morning and I was back to normal - I do think it was salt...

Re: help - ankle swelling

I'm older than you are, 50, but I started having swollen ankles last year. Sometimes they were painful. I could tell it was hormonal. After my doc put me on birth control pills for my irregular periods (I'm in peri-menopause), the swelling went away.

Re: help - ankle swelling

Colinette;

Thank you! I have noticed that it has happened twice -right before "that time" - my dr has offered to me on birth control but I am going to hold off if I can even though I have heard b.c. does wonders for peri...
