No period for 18 months

I was quite concerned when I didn't have a period for six months. I went to my gyn to discuss the problem. I had lab work, examinations and was given medication to start my period (after 12 months nothing). I went back for a second time because my gyn thought I might have been in peri-menopause (now 18 months and nothing). My lab work suggested that I was not in menopause. I lost my job and have no health insurance so cannot go back for a third time. I will be 40 in a week. could this be the problem? No one can tell me what is wrong, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: No period for 18 months

Hi I love me70,

So your hormones were checked and came back non-menopausal? It's not unusual for some women to go through early menopause. Do you know how old your mom or sisters were when they went through it? Even though your labs came back negative for meno doesn't mean that you are not experiencing it, I think you just need to listen to your body. Are you having any of the classic meno symptoms (hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, etc.)? I know that my sister started missing her periods and she went in for lab work and all came back normal and she hasn't had a period in 10 years since her blood work came back normal. So I am not so sure how reliable the lab work really is. Maybe thats why Gynos don't rely on it so much.

Hope this helps,
Missy

p.s. Happy 40th birthday!!!!!

Re: No period for 18 months

I went started peri-meno pause at age 39 and no doc would belive me! I went thru hell trying to figure out what was wrong! Don't let the blood tests fool you - Missy is right - listen to your body! I went a full year without a period and then had a gusher - after that - no more - by that time I had developed a full blown anxiety disorder because the clueless docs could not figure any of it out!

Take heart - you will be okay - don't them doctors put you in a "box" we are all so different - try to relax!
