Why are nights so bad?

Why are the symptoms of menopause so much worse during the night? I am ok when I go to bed then I wake around 5am feeling hot and bothered, with bad dreams often real nightmares. I go get a drink of water, settle again and try to sleep. When I wake around 8am I feel so rough! Aching, tired and drained.

Once I get up, brush teeth, move around, exercise, shower, do makeup and hair and have breakfast I feel like a healthy human being again! Usually I feel well and energetic for the day, fit, alert. I eat really healthily, minimise stress and believe in natural healing. (I take no tablets, no supplements or anything)

I just wondered why it all gets so awful during the night? The nightmares I get are disturbing. Yet my life is balanced and good otherwise. These hormones must be very powerful and I presume the fluctuations are magnified somehow during sleep.

p.s. I am 49 years old and have experienced these changes significantly in the last 12 months or less. My own mother had her menopause at 50
