Question Uncircumsized child: Foreskin is red, swollen, pain ful?

My 10 year old uncircumcized son's foreskin is red , irritated, and swollen. As he has not entered puberty yet, he had never retracted the skin... However, several weeks ago, the pediatrician yanked it back to the point where it hurt him, and told him to do this on a dialy basis because at the time he had some smegna.

I am confused... I thought that it was best not to try to retract it at this age...Now this pediatrician is saying to do it???

Prior to my son following this new advice he never had a problem with redness or irritation before!

Can anyone suggest something that would help relieve the pain? The poor kid is walking funny because it hurts!

Thanks In Advance!

Re: Uncircumsized child: Foreskin is red, swollen, pain ful?

The doctor may have actually ripped the foreskin from the head. They might have been attached before he/she yanked it. If he had smegma, it might mean that they were separating on their own.
If it is red, it is irritated, or possibly infected. Soap can cause this kind of irritation. I would advise against using it. If he does, tell him to rinse for a while, with plain water, to get all the soap off. If you think it is a mild infection, you can try having him put diaper ointment with zinc oxide on it. If that doesn't take care of the problem in a day or two, he needs to see a doctor, to get an antibiotic. I would have some confrontational words with the doctor if he was my boy. After all, the doctor has likely caused a problem, where there was none, and the doctor's behavior needs to be corrected.
Doctors are often ignorant, when it comes to proper care of the natural penis. It is sad, but true.

Re: Uncircumsized child: Foreskin is red, swollen, pain ful?

Thank you so much for your response!

This is hard for me, as A North American woman, I have no experience in this area… Honestly, I had never seen an uncircumcised penis until I changed my son’s first diaper! My husband was circumcised at birth, and therefore, also has no experience in this area!

Ignoring the insistence of the meddlesome nurses and doctors, I chose not to circumcise either of my sons…

I am very surprised to be having a problem with the pediatrician now, because he has been seeing both of my sons since the day they were born, and was the only medical person who supported my decision on this in the first place! While the nurses felt it was “insane” not to circumcise, he put them in their place explaining that it is purely a religious thing – not medically necessary!

Probably 90% of boys here are still getting circumcised, and I expect it would be difficult to find another doctor who is “Un-Cut Friendly.” But, It just seems natural (for most people) that the foreskin would retract when ready – without added pressure– without pain and inflammation!

He is getting close to” that age” now, and I don’t want him to ever feel different or confused. I just don’t know what the best advice or information is to give him is!

I really appreciate any words of advice from those who have first hand knowledge of this!

Re: Uncircumsized child: Foreskin is red, swollen, pain ful?

WOW, I'm really surprised the doc did that. Sometimes prior to puberty (about his age) our foreskin should normally seperate from the head of the penis and begin to move freely about over the head. I'm uncut so totally understand his equipment and what he'll deal with. I'm glad that you chose not to have him circumcised (although others will disagree) he'll be grateful as he ages that you left him intact, it'll provide lots of pleasure for him later in life. I'm sorry now that he is in pain, hopefully this will subside soon.

I'd try some antibiotic ointment to see if it helps. I'm sure the swelling and pain is the result of some tearing. Also, being irritated like this it'll sure sting of feel awful when he urinates and that is going to be frustrating as well. This doc just sounds a bit too agressive with it too early.

Lets get through this first and then I'll be (we'll be) glad to talk you through some other things to be aware of in the next few years. Since your husband hasn't been through this you'll have to rely on others to help ensure that things are working properly and taken care of. Through his teenage years he'll have to work with that foreskin to make sure it retracts to allow thorough cleaning of the head and underside of his foreskin. He'll need to make sure that it retracts fully when erect and that the opening is large enough to allow it to slip over the head. All of that is for later though.

Don't hesitate to get him back to the doc if this doesn't subside in a few days/week or so. He shouldn't be in pain and how awful to have that done. Poor lil fellow, its already tough enough to have things done to our equipment but to have an experienc like this makes it even tougher. Good luck and keep us posted.

Where do you live...what state or province? I'm wondering where the rate is still near 90%?
Like Lance said, we're here, and ready to help.
I had 3 doctors tell me my son needed a circumcision at age 3, because he couldn't retract. I couldn't believe then that they were all wrong, but they were. It is not uncommon for a 3 year old not to be able to retract, and it is perfectly normal.

Re: Uncircumsized child: Foreskin is red, swollen, pain ful?

Although some uncircumcised males don't reatract until after puberty, it is vey rare. A majority are retractable by age 4.

I think the doctor is doing the right thing by encouraging your son to start retracting, stretching and cleaning. You only have to read for a while on this board and see there are many problems with phimosis and balanitis in uncircumcised males.

If he continues to have problems, and no other methods to correct the problem work, circumcision may be necessary but be rest assured, circumcision is a good thing and has no detrimental effects whatsoever.

Good luck.

Re: Uncircumsized child: Foreskin is red, swollen, pain ful?

What I see on this board is people looking for information which is not readily available.
One or two people a day with phimosis out of a population of 240 million in the US, and 9 billion worldwide, is not many problems with uncircumcised males.

Circumcision isn't nearly as "medically necessary" as American doctors would have you believe. The rate in Finland, a country with more advanced medicine than the US, is under .009%.

While I am sure that removing 20,000 sexually sensitive nerves has no effect whatsoever, I am not in a hurry to try it.

I guess it all depends on your point of view.

Re: Uncircumsized child: Foreskin is red, swollen, pain ful?

Why is it that the only kids who have problems with their penises are those who are uncircumcised?

This kid would not have had a problem if the doctor hadn't ripped his skin back and damaged it. Some circumcised guys have problems too, like skin bridges and scarring, that can't be fixed with simple stretching like phimosis. This case is fairly mild http://www.healthboards.com/boards/showthread.php?t=171236 . There was another guy not so long ago who had it really bad. These problems don't usually get noticed till adulthood and never get include in circumcision complication statistics. Most medical authorities in the world say that the risks balance out any potential benefits (and these are debatable anyway).

Re: Uncircumsized child: Foreskin is red, swollen, pain ful?

Well... I'm new to this site and was surprised not by the initial post, but by the replies. My doctor did the same to me at age 7. I hadn't retracted nor did I know I had to. A female doctor did not know what to do and called in a male doctor. He pulled the foreskin back and while it only hurt a little... I have also had problems with balantisis ever since. (I just learned what that was today at 25 - reason why I'm on the website) So far, I have discovered rinsing with salt water seems to be the answer. I have not yet tried it as I just learned this. I hope your son is doing better... I literally feel his pain. I just wish my parents had taken the initiative to learn about this for me. All I have know about the topic was from that one day 18 years ago and websites these last few years.

Dear GM78,
you might find some of the information in my stretching instructions post useful too.
http://www.healthboards.com/boards/showthread.php?t=178155
To copy and paste it highlight the address and press "Ctrl" and "c". Then delete the address in the web browser's Address window and with the cursor still in that window press "Ctrl" and "v". Then press the "Enter" key.
That’s on a PC. There must be similar shortcuts on a Mac but I don’t know them.
Good luck,
Geoff

Thanks, but I do not need info on stretching. My post was regarding Balantisis.

It was the stuff in there about smegma removal that I though might be helpful.

I know that some will disagree, but circ has worked for me--all my life. I have no problems with balantisis, phimosis, stretching, smegma etc. Do not be scared off by the anti-circ crowd.
