what does low fsh & lh mean along w/low testosterone
My FSH was low...... 1.4 and LH 0.4. My testosterone was 166. What does this mean? I heard it is a pituitary problem or hypothalamus. I recently had an MRI done but I don't have the results back yet. Please help!
Re: what does low fsh & lh mean along w/low testosterone
My Testostrone was tested 4 times once every 20 min. X 3 my test was boderline 400 and above My Doctor told me 450 is mid range I was put on Androgel 5% testostrone replacement and had to stop because of side effects, High blood Pressure, retaining water, and werid feelings. My Doctor told me to stop taking it,I was not low enough that I had to take it. A 150 # would be low.
Re: what does low fsh & lh mean along w/low testosterone
The doctor who says 250 is mid range for T levels is way out of line. Maybe for a 100 year old man that would be mid range. I will post a list of possible issues living for long periods on low T can cause. But first I want to address the low LH and FSH question.
Low LH and FSH does in fact mean your pituitary (in the brain) is not sending these hormones to tell your testicles to make Testosterone and sperm. This can be caused by a number of things. One is a pituitary adenoma (a very small usually benign tumor). Other reasons can vary from being hypothyroid, empty sella syndrome (another pituitary disorder), hemochromatosis (a genetic disorder causing the body to abosrb too much iron from food loading it into various organs including the pituitary), vitamin D deficiency, excess estrogen and/or estradiol in your blood, unkown causes (the majority of cases), other causes I'm forgetting. It is very possible depending on how long you have had this condition that HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) will get your testicles working again and you T level back up to where it should be. This is an injectible drug which is identical (virutally) to LH and can be self injected with a very fine insulin syringe. If that does not work you can combine it with T replacement of some type or take replacement by itself. But be sure to check for all the causes above to rule them out. Some of them require addtional steps, like hemochromatosis for example.
Here are the long term issues with not treating low testosterone:
For each person, it is important to weigh the risks and benefits of treatment. However, the risks of continuing deficient testosterone levels are clear. They include:
1. Heart attacks.
2. Strokes.
3. Prostate cancer, possibly other cancers (from unbalanced estrogens actions).
4. Chronic fatigue and difficulty coping with stress (accompanying adrenal fatigue/insufficiency that secondarily occurs with low testosterone levels)
5. Excessive anxiety, stress, irritability, anger outbursts (the irritable male syndrome)
6. Severe depression.
7. Impaired memory and attention, difficulty learning new material (some to the extent of a dementia-like syndrome).
8. Impaired fertility - if low FSH/LH levels or FSH/LH resistance are the cause of low testosterone levels.
9. Lack of libido, erectile dysfunction - often bandaged with Viagra, but with undiagnosed testosterone deficiency as a direct cause.
10. Obesity - which is difficult to treat with diet alone - which can lead to arthritic conditions.
11. Diabetes
12. Loss of muscle mass.
13. Osteoporosis
14. Impaired immune system.
15. Reduced reaction time, quickness of reaction, mental quickness (from reduced dopamine levels, insulin-resistance associated with testosterone deficiency - among other associated changes)
Re: what does low fsh & lh mean along w/low testosterone
I made a mistake! It was 400 + and 550 medium. If the shots are anything like the rub on Testostrone Androgel It causes me to have high B/P & Retain fluids my test were above 400 test.
Re: what does low fsh & lh mean along w/low testosterone
djpatd,
I see in another post of yours you may have some liver issue going on also. When you have secondary hypogonadism as you do (when LH is low and testosterone is low) then one of the tests your doctor should run is for hemochromatosis. This is especially true for you since you may have a liver issue also. There is a genetic test available which can tell you if you have the defective gene(s) but it does not tell you if you have it or not because you can have the defective genes and not be sick from it. To check to see if you have it now you need to run 4 blood iron tests, ferritin, iron, TIBC, and saturation %. I would definitely suggest you check it out. Its not likely you have this but if you do you must treat it. It can load iron in the pituitary as well as the liver and other places causing lots of problems. It is most common in Irish and european descent and is the most common genetic disorder effecting 1 of every 200 people.

I'm not sure why you thought I had Liver Problems I don't? I have low Iron and take a supplement I am Irish. I am gettting me and Appointment with a Doctor who handles these Male problems so as to find out what needs to be done. Thanks for your input.

Thanks for your feedback. I am awaiting the results of the MRI of the brain and have a personal friend who is a doctor and hopefully should have some answers. Thanks!
Re: what does low fsh & lh mean along w/low testosterone
I would check out the other known causes. These include hemochromatosis, vitamin D deficiency, hypothyroidism, excess estrogen (estradiol in particular).
Most likely you will fall into the category most people do of no known cause. In this case you must treat the disease symptoms rather than its cause. This means testosterone replacement or HCG or both. HCG will keep your testicles working so they do not atrophy. This means it will keep them from shrinking and most likely keep you fertile in case that is a concern. HCG does not work for everyone sufficiently but it works for most. In my case I was on replacement (androgel) too long once I started HCG. So I have to take HCG and T injections. You may get along with just HCG or you may need to combine both like I do, or you may not care about being fertile or your testicles shrinking and you can just take T replacement of some type.
You can also try the clomid test. In this test you take clomid for a week or up to a month and then test T and LH again. If the clomid can "trick" you pituitary into sending more LH it will show up on your blood test and you may be able to use clomid instead of T replacement. Depending on what is wrong with your pituitary or hypothalmus clomid may be able to trick them into thinking you don't have enough T so they send more LH to the testicles.
Re: what does low fsh & lh mean along w/low testosterone
An endo is probably your best bet unless you can afford an anti- aging doctor. Unfortunately finding a doctor that is good at testosterone issues is amazingly difficult. Most Endos seem to specialize in either thyroid issues or diabetes issues. Anti-aging doctors are generally pretty good at this but many of them do not take insurance. You are left to file your own insurance and they will not be a PPO provider. There are certainly some endo's that are good for this but finding the right one can be a problem.
