Unhappy Bad reaction to Androgel and Testim

I'm a 39 yr old male who last year was told I had low Testosterone. Dr prescribed Testim. A few days later I felt like I was crawling out of my skin, real bad anxiety and depression. I have been treated for those and have been taking medicine for about 10 yrs and doing pretty well I must say. The anxiety and depression after the Testim was just as bad as what was going on prior to starting my meds. We then tried Androgel and had the same experience. I went to a different Dr recently who ran blood and my level is 172. I just read the Testosterone Symdrome and was optimistic about trying again. This time my Dr put me on the Androgel pump and to just try 1 pump (1.25 mgs). She figured we would titrate up to a normal dose after a few weeks. I started the gel on Friday (4 days) and the anxiety and depression returned like it was before on Androgel and Testim. My Dr has now referred me to an Endo Dr. Has anyone heard of bad reactions to this? I'm kind of down in the dumps now after reading other people's success stories and having this reaction. I even increase my anti anxiety meds but to no avail. Help!!!

Re: Bad reaction to Androgel and Testim

Sandman, I'm new to the testosterone issue myself, and while I can't answer your question, would you mind telling me where your testosterone was, score-wise, when your doctor decided to do testosterone replacement?

Thanks.

it could be taht your body was reacting to the increased levels of T and it would adjust itself in a few weeks. you may want them to look at your adrenal gland because that may need to be treated as well. once the testes stop producing T the adrenal tries to take over and can lead to adrenal fatigue which can cause bad anxiety and depression ( I have to take hydrocortizone for my adrenal gland. with out it I'm a nervous wreck)

What I mean by your body reacting is that it may be uncovering other problems. The endo system is all tied together. You should have went to an endo a long time ago and your doctor should have been trying ot figure out why your testicles were not producing T.

Re: Bad reaction to Androgel and Testim

I have not heard of this reaction to topical T. Maybe you should try a T injection to see what happens. I would say maybe it is related to estradiol getting too high but that is not likely on just one pump. Still on your next test please ask for estradiol and total estrogen to be checked. If too high this could cause your anxiety AND low T.

Re: Bad reaction to Androgel and Testim

My reading was 172. Thanks for the input. I will ask about these things when I go to see the endo. I was thinking about the shots but if I had a bad reaction to the gel at least I can stop it and get rid of those feelings. If I did the shots I'm thinking if I had a bad reaction to that I'd be miserable for a week or however long it takes to get out of my body. Don't you get that roller coaster feeling on the shots? I just found out the endo can't see me till April 1st. Should I try to find a new Dr or try another angle to get in with him sooner?
