How to relax sphincter? (poop problem)

Hey guys,
I've posted this here before (years ago) and haven't gotten any helpful answers yet. I finally figured out what the problem was.

Basically, when I poop, about 65% of the time there will be a little turd left over in my anus and it will force me to wipe about 15 times until it's clean. I will also need to continue to wipe every few hours or my boxers will get skidmarks (poop stains). I am sick of feeling self-conscious about a smell, I am sick of being afraid to poop because of "leftovers," and I am sick of having to go to the bathroom and go to a stall every few hours after I poop.

Does anyone have any tips on how to better relax the sphincter or anus? Or any other help for my problem?

You are not alone.. But there is no cure that's just how it is. The muscles have stopped being as sharp/firm as they once were back there so now a lot of us have to deal with the never ending wipe! All I can say is at home use baby wipes and also be sure to take them with you if you travel...they sell little personal packs of them. You still have to wipe a lot but it is quicker with a damp baby wipe. You will also have to be sure to wipe again later but the baby wipe makes it easier. I am guessing that is why some have a bidet in their homes or at least some way to spray themselves off ....even if you have a hand wand in your tub or shower you can do a quick wash. A wet wash cloth also makes it quicker but of course you have to wipe with toilet tissue first to get the most off. It is not fun but that's the way it is so just invest in a big box of baby wipes and keep some with you for daytime use. sorry but that's the cards some of us were delt.

Re: How to relax sphincter? (poop problem)

Well, I don't think it has anything to do with "back then"... I'm a 19 year old, lol. Growing up as a kid I was always constipated, I think I had some fear of taking a dump because even now my initial response is to try and hold it in. But it makes me really gassy and uncomfortable, so I've been trying to get more in tune with my body, and I don't know.. I'm around the age when I am going to start having sex, and since I live in a dorm it's kinda hard to do a nice anus wash (I usually wash it off when I shower, just rub body wash on it with my finger) because of the smell in the showers.

Re: How to relax sphincter? (poop problem)

Have you seen a doctor about your problem? If all is well, you may just need a good colon cleanser. Once your colon has been cleaned, your diet must change too. Do you drink plenty of water? My 15 year old have a simular problem. He has the tendancy to hold his bowel movements until he can't any longer, then make a mad rush for the toilet, quite often leaving more than can be flush down the drain. He has extremely large bm's. I've talked with his pediatrician about his problem, and he suggested that I buy a cooky/wafer laxitive and give him twice a day with a full glass of water. This will regulate his digestive system, and he will have daily bowel movements, and they won't be as large, and hard to push out. I think you, like him are some what constipated. Once your system is cleaned out, take a daily mild laxitive (prunes are a good one) and you will see a big different, decrease in the number of times you have to clean yourself.
If it's a case of weak anus muscles, you might ask your doctor if there is a way to gain back the strenth in this area? Maybe there is a surgery that can tightens things up.
Just the same, don't give up looking for an answer to your problem.

It seems to me that this happens when, for whatever reason, I "cut off the flow." This will have a tendency to happen a lot more if you are constipated and have to push and grunt to get everything out and then your spinchter naturally closes.

It can also be a male curse if you are also urinating at the same time and, as is natural, flex your muscles when finished. Finally, it can easily happen if you get an erection while sitting there. Amy flexing of your penis will cut off the process of what you are trying to do.

I believe the key is to always keep hydrated and eat foods with fiber and then when defecating, stay relaxed until your colon is completely empty. It will take a lot of practice and still there will be times when not everything makes its way out but you will notice immediately that you are cleaner when you are not constipated.

Meanwhile, you can buy a small can of Tucks or a generic of disposable wipes that you can keep in you pocket at all times.

I have/had the same problem. Here's what I do, I take about 2-3 tablespoons
of Metamucil(I use Walmart brand) its orange flavored and mixes with water. I drink this at night and it helps me to have "complete" bm's. Just a push and out it comes.
Good Luck

Tucks are a great idea. Metamucil works well and is harmless, or even helpful, especially the less tasty but sugar-free Konsyl, available at W-Mart.
Even better is eating dried prunes. Removing stress from your life also helps.

Re: How to relax sphincter? (poop problem)

hey guys! Sorry I didn't respond for awhile, I have been busy.
I don't think it's a fiber problem. I am not constipated anymore.. I poop daily, and I eat plenty of vegetables and fruit. It was just when I was younger that I was constipated (ate lots of cheese/dairy, rarely ate fruit and vegetables... my poops would be very hard and dry).

Let me try and say this in another way.. You know how when you poop, there is usually a main log and then a little ball/pebble/whatever that comes out after? For me, many times that last little part does not drop out (it just stays in my sphincter and makes me perma-wipe and very self-conscious). I am trying to figure out exercises to relax my sphincter so I can have that piece drop out. Does anyone have any ideas?

Re: How to relax sphincter? (poop problem)

g-daddy,
I know *exactly* what you are talking about. This was never a problem for me until last year. I know almost immediately if I will be wiping forever or if I will be done with 2 wipes. It is a matter of relaxing. You have to depend upon every relaxing technique you have ever used to keep from flexing your spinchter muscles until everything is out.

BTW, you don't have to be constipated to need more fiber. It is when my fiber is sufficient that everything is "together." Reminds me of the old phrase!! When it is "together" it is like you dropped an eel and you know there is nothing else.

It may also help to practice Keegals to stregthen those muscles.

Still, having said all that, there are still times when I know I will have to simply jump in the shower again (if I am fortunate to be at home!). Water is cheaper than paper in AZ! But to let you know how I sympathize, I can remember taking 3 showers before going to work one day.

You say this have been going on for quite a while? Since you were a kid?
What does your doctor have to say about this? After so long of dealing with this problem, it really is time that you a complete physical to determine what's up. After trying all else/natural colon cleasers/laxatives/fruits and veggies etc. You really need to go see a professional, a doctor that deal with colon problems. I think that it's more than just relaxing. You need to have your anus/colon checked out. Your problem may not take much to fix..Good luck!

I've never talked to my doctor about it. I told him about constipation and he told me to either take a fiber supplement or change my diet (i was eating frozen pizzas for most meals).

I'm looking for specific exercises to help relax my sphincter.. does anyone know how to go about beginning this? I think because of my constipation at a young age I just don't have the necessary muscle control, but it may very well be a colon issue. I'll tell my doctor at my next physical.

Are you sure you do not have piles (hemorrhoids)? This could cause the symptoms you describe.

Oh, and what are "bm's"????

It could be hemorrhoids... When I was younger if I pooped it would bleed (maybe due to dryness/size of the stool). I think a bm is a bowel movement.

What kind of tests would be ran on me to check for colon/hemorrhoid/sphincter problems?

I would try to improve diet even more by eliminating all white flour, breads (unless have 3gms of fiber or more), cheese and any other known constipating foods. More water might work as well. I would also ask doctor about solutions to this problem.

You might look into a temporary solution of doing a 1-2 minute enema with a tiny bit of water (1/4 cup) if you think it is something that you can do. A very gentle and somewhat steady hand is required so as not to injure yourself in any way. If not just keep improving the diet. Lubricating the tip with ky jelly is key and wiping afterwards with a soothing herbal ointment for hemmroids (wiseways witch hazel salve) also helps with any irritation. No need for showers or constant wiping.

Re: How to relax sphincter? (poop problem)

Make sure there's plenty of fibre in your diet (raisins, fruit, healthy breakfast cereals etc.) and take a newspaper or magazine in the crapper with you.
If you get reading something while taking a dump, your mind won't be on pooping, and your anal muscles will be a lot more relaxed. Also, you'll be so engrossed in reading whatever article you're reading that you'll find yourself sat there for longer, so all the poop will leave.

Sometimes when I've done that, I've let so much poop out that it I felt genuinely empty haha. I need to take newspapers into the crapper with me more often; it's a great feeling!!

Seriously though, I know it sounds weird, but it just might work! Plus it keeps you up to date on your current affairs at the same time. Bonus!

Good luck anyway!
