Question Dad Can't Urinate After Knee Surgery

Hello: My 85-year-old dad had knee replacement surgery this past Thursday. Since then, he has had a catheter in place and when they remove it, he can't urinate on his own. He had prostate surgeries in the past and has been fine for many, many years, up until his surgery. The nurse in charge is suggesting he see a urologist to rule out prostate problems. They think his prostate could have been traumatized in some way after the surgery. I can't believe all of a sudden his prostate is becoming problematic because he has been fine for so many years.

Anyone have this type of problem after surgery? It's been five days and he still can't urinate on his own.

Thanks for any input you can give.

Update: The doc removed the catheter yesterday and, good news, he urinated on his own! His system was just "shocked" and needed time to settle down. Good for him!
