DHEA is not directly converted to testosterone, but rather proceeds
via the intermediate androstenedione. The conversion from DHEA
into androstenedione is governed by ACTH in the adrenals and
production of gonadal androstenedione is under the control of
gonadaltropins. I don't know what the proportions are. But it
seems that some conversion takes place in the adrenals and some
(probably most) in the gonads. Can't seem to find a detailed
description of the location of the conversion.
