help me diagnose dry, flaky, peely skin on tip of penis.

hey all.

i have been dealing with this issue (on and off) for quite a while now, beginning around october/november of 07. here are my symptoms:

if you were to look at the underside of my penis, at the tip, just below the opening - i have a small narrow patch of skin that has been dry and flaky. the skin "hardens" to the point where it will crack and scale off (sort of like sunburnt skin). if the dry, flaky skin is peeled off it reveals a shiny, very smooth, noticeably red patch of skin. skin that is much more red, with a much different texture than the surrounding pink healthy skin.

note, this issue has never cause any bleeding. although, if a flake is peeled off it may take with it a piece of healthy skin (like if you peel lose skin near your fingernails).

the issue has cleared itself for a few weeks at a time. other times it is worse for no particular reason.

i practice safe sex, and it would be hard to believe i contracted this from a sexual encounter. but anything is possible i guess.

as of late i have been treating it with cortisone cream, which seems to have helped (although obviously not cure). lotions do not do much, nor does neosporin.

what do you all think?

thanks for looking!

I'd see a dermatologist. This sounds like a bad case of yeast, but I would have thought the lotramine would have taken care of it. That's why I would see the doctor.

Re: help me diagnose dry, flaky, peely skin on tip of penis.

thanks for the response.

another thing to note is that i do not experience any burning or irritation. additionally the area has not grown much over the span, maybe a cm in all directions at the most.

psoriasis seems to come up a in a lot of my posts. ill be visiting a derm soon.

any other responses would be appreciated.

psoriasis or eczema are possibilities.

Re: help me diagnose dry, flaky, peely skin on tip of penis.

im updating this thread, in hopes of a few additional responses...

shortly after my post, i went back to treating the area with cortisone cream. it relieved the flaky symptom but (once again) did not remove the red, glossy, shiny patch of skin. ive found this to be the case with the other topicals, such as neosporin.

the affected patch of skin has a unique texture compared to the rest of the head of my penis (during the times i am treating with topicals) - very smooth and glossy.

after a week of treating with cortisone and no improvement once again, i stopped. the patch actually improved after i stopped treatment, it became less red (dry, but with small amount flaking)...

then it just got too dry (with the skin under it red, smooth textured). after reading up on yeast infection posts and related information on the web i bought some vaginal cream (2%, lotramin stuff - 7 day treatment ointment). so far im on my second day, but with no improvement. once again, the flakiness is gone, but the soft smooth shiny glossy red patch of skin remains.

im close to making an appointment with the derm, if the yeast cream does not show any signs of improvement within a week. i just fear that it is something more serious, an STD of some sort.

sorry for such a long post, i would appreciate any other comments. thank you tommy for your posts as well.

Re: help me diagnose dry, flaky, peely skin on tip of penis.

Hi California1, did you manage to see a derm? I have the exact same problem and I went for all the STD tests and they were all negative. The nurse at the STd clinic suggested I should go to my family doctor to get this looked at. As you said, all my searches come up with psoriasis too. But I havent seen my doctor yet - lets see what he says. I am really concerned and worried.

Re: help me diagnose dry, flaky, peely skin on tip of penis.

started a treatment on my own with some OTC women's yeast cream, which helped relieve some of the peeling skin. for a bit, it was still red and shiny. just a little improvement overall...

i saw a derm, he if it were psoriasis - it was the smallest case he's ever seen. basically, he said not to worry about it. also, he doubted very much that it was yeast infection. it is not contagious, its not an STD.. just a basic skin issue, something that could happen anywhere really. he gave me 2.5 cortisone, which has also helped a bit. the patch of skin definitely looks different than the rest of my glans, but is much improved from a month or two ago. im wondering if it's just scarred now.

good luck, post when you have more info

Re: help me diagnose dry, flaky, peely skin on tip of penis.

I finally did manage to get to a family doctor and he refused to give me hydrortizone for the skin, saying i should keep using nivea/vaseline. I tried using the OTC yeast cream and that helped a lot. I have noticed if i drink beer, it comes back...so maybe thats what it is. So, now i am lookin for a new family doctor which isnt easy .

Re: help me diagnose dry, flaky, peely skin on tip of penis.

i have seen 2 derms, both say its not an STD. both say nothing to worry about, although its difficult given the area.

the most recent derm visit, just a week and a half ago, i was told its not uncommon to find this type of issue on the tip of the penis. its easily irritable, exposed to urine, damp conditions, etc. it cannot be transmitted, so i dont have to worry about that.

i find that the moisturizing doesn't do much. alcohol wipes didnt really do anything. yeast cream stopped the flaking, more so than moisturizer and neosporin. i have some other antifungal/bacterial creams also, not much goin with that. the most bizarre part is that one minute it looks pretty bad, and the next it looks promising. i think i will not to do anything to it. ill just let it be, allow it to dry out and repair itself. ive been putting something on it for as long as i can remember, maybe im due for a new plan.

Re: help me diagnose dry, flaky, peely skin on tip of penis.

Man! California 1 and others have been a big help because I've had the same symptoms since June...and it was driving me crazy. Saw, general doc then Derm who both said it wasn't an STD and that was really great becuase I'm married and don't stray(and pretty sure she deosn't either).

Used some OTC womens vagistat3 and it stopped the little peel and makes it look a bit more like normal. I first noticed mine after my wife gave me oral and may have scratched me with teeth. She had a yeast infection during that time so i thought that was the cause. We've been married 25 years this has never come up.

As long as Its not cancer..I'm starting to accept it and hope it just goes away

Smile Re: help me diagnose dry, flaky, peely skin on tip of penis.

My patch has almost gone now....I have even stopped using the OTC yeast cream. I have observed something that I thought I should share with you all. If I drink beer (Stella or Heineken), the patch comes back. Also, if I eat too many sweets, then it reappears. Now, its more like a scar than a dry, flaky patch. Do you guys drink a lot of beer? I know this sounds silly but hey, if this helps, I thought I should share it.

Re: help me diagnose dry, flaky, peely skin on tip of penis.

I have the same thing. I noticed it after my wife and i had sex after a few days. I think it might have been b/c i didnt shower until the next day. I had this dry crusty patch on my penis head when i woke up one morning. I kinda freaked and jsut picked it off with my fingernails, it was about the size of a grain of rice. now there is a red patch where my fingernail scraped off the crust that sometimes gets flaky. We've been married for 4 years and we are monogamous. After looking at pics online, it looked like a yeast infection. Using monostats 7 just makes it look moisturied, but it gets a little flaky. I will use it for 7 days though. I will try to stop eating sweets and just drink wine instead of beer. Thanks for the advice serpico3680. Ill let yall know if i find any relief. It doesnt hurt, just kinda annyoing having this red flaky patch on my penis head. I might go to the dr if anything changes.

Think I have same thing, funny thing is I do drink alot of beer, and it does seem to reappear after a long weekend of drinking. It comes and goes, no pain, irritation or anything. I was thinking it was yeast related due to all the beer, find anything else out yet?
