Most of the vitamins (like vitamin c) are water soluble. So if you have more than your body needs, you basically will just pee it out. The only ones that aren't water soluble are A,D,E,K (fat soluble vitamins). Taking more than you need for these can become toxic.
Not everyone needs a multivitamin. If you have a balanced diet (think 5 servings fruits/vegetables a day, 3 servings of dairy, etc), you may not need it. If you're eating pretty well and taking a multivitamin, you also may not to take single vitamin supplements in addition unless you have a deficiency or are taking them to protect again a disease (ie: vitamin e and heart disease).
