normal total t, high free t on replacement

I just retrieved my lab results from late December and have a question or two. I started on Striant, buccal replacement, after using 1 tube Testim without much success. On the Testim my total was = 330. My baseline before starting any t replacement was total = 234, free= 8.8. Now, using the Striant I test at total = 554 (range 241-827 ng/dl), free= 24.9 pg/mL (range 6.6-21.5). Additionally, my PSA=0.7 ng/mL, prolactin = 4.7 ng/mL, LH <.3 mIU/mL, FSH= 1.5 mIU/mL. I feel much better on the Striant but still have not resolved all my male issues.

Is it bad to have high free T considering my total is normal/good? Also, is the very low LH due to the replacement (ie body not making it's own t)? My LH was low before replacement (1.05) and so was my FSH (3.31). Finally, my prolactin is always low range. I think this is desirable (as opposed to high)?!?

Re: normal total t, high free t on replacement

This method sounds interesting to me.... I am on Tcyp shots, but still have libido and ED problems.... I did better on gel, but it stopped working for me....i think that free T is good...many men have normal total T and low free T and exp issues... I have had good free T on gel and shots... still does not fix all my male problems... what male problems are you still experiencing? I am going to do some research on this product and see if I can maybe get my Dr to let me give it a try....

Re: normal total t, high free t on replacement

Jinxy,

I would encourage anyone with transfer concerns, etc. to try Striant. I'm very pleased with it and I think my results are just what the doctor ordered . I can't begin to tell you how much better I like it than Testim.

Just meant not back to age 20 status, occasionally use Cialis . . . but much better than before. Mostly, my issues in this dept. seem to be prostate related. That is, if my prostate is in good condition, then my sexual health seems to be good. I've been taking Prostalex and those symptoms have improved dramatically.

Thanks for the reply and I'll hope to hear from others on the high free t. . .

Re: normal total t, high free t on replacement

Judge,
thanks for the info.. I am going to see if my dr will let me try it... Does your ins cover the Striant? btw!!!! How old are you if you dont mind my asking????last question.... Do you get used to having the pill on your gums 24/7?? I did a search on this on another board and someone complained about this(gums) and then went on shots!!! I am so sick and tired of people who say that shots are the greatest... I have not had good luck with them... they are more convienient, but I still have issues. so what does that really mean.!!!!???? getting off the soap box now.....

thanks again for the info....

Re: normal total t, high free t on replacement

Jinxy,

It's covered just like the Testim was. I just have the copay which Striant has a coupon program for that part (like Testim and Androgel). I'm age 40. There's just a small "learning curve" with the tablet. I use something to dry my gum a bit and then place it. At first, they slip/slide but you get better at it. I was constantly touching it with my tongue, at first, but then I got more used to it. After a few weeks, I hardly noticed it. The tablet feels dry at first and then goes to a gel like substance, yet stays intact. It causes mouth irritation in 10% or less. I had a bit of irritation with it but not blistering, etc. If I have a blister or canker sore around my gum then I just keep it on the other side or back off a day or two.

As to the shots, I'm thankful that I haven't had to go that route. It must be that my levels are treatable with alternative treatment. I know in Dr. Morgentaler's book, he indicates that he uses shots only after not attaining good results with gels, pellets, buccal . . . There is a long term shot under review by the FDA, as I understand it. He indicates it would be effective for 10 weeks, I think. So, that might cause me to consider a change to it, when available. I would imagine that is part of the problem with the shots now. Too much t too fast. I read people on here who seem to constantly have to tinker with the dose, timing, etc. I don't think I could do it and I don't like needles, Took allergy shots for 5 years and still feel the needles.

btw, if you'll search Striant on this board, I had posted some of their trial results so that will save you a bit of research.

Re: normal total t, high free t on replacement

now that you mention it, I've had a few pimples. noticed one this week on my chin (maybe I am approaching age 20 status again). So, I would just say spotty but nothing serious. If your doc will go along, I'd say give it a try. That way, I won't be the only one on here praising it (hopefully). I still can't believe no one else on here uses it, although, Dr. Morgentaler indicates in his book that he's seeing good results with his patients that use it but he doesn't see it being one of the leading products because most prefer gels, pellets . . . The PA at my urology clinic indicated that I was only the 2nd prescription they had written for it but my doctor mentioned it to me when I started on the testim as a good choice. As I may have mentioned, my pharmacist indicated that buccal is the best absorption method for any medicine (not just testosterone). He felt that even one 30 mg tablet is going to absorb more available t than 1 50 mg tube of gel. So, 30 mg x 2/day is evidently giving a great % of absorption.

Jinxy,

Any luck on the Striant?

Anyone else with an opinion on the high free t, normal total t while on replacement?

No... not yet... I have an appt with a new Dr on 3-12... going to run it by him.... I am pretty sure I am going to try it.... I am on a new dose of T cyp... I want to give it a chance before I jump ship.... the 1x week shot is very convienent.... but, I have been at this shot thing for over a year without good luck.... I will keep you posted...
interesting thing!!! I did some research on the striant web site... they have some info on there that says DHT levels should stay in the normal range with striant, mine is below normal on shots(22), and that the ratio should be 9 to 12 of total T... so I calculate that to be with a TT of 600, btw 50 - 66... normal range on quest blood work is 25 - 75... so that is promising... I did call the contact number for the striant mfg, and the guy there said DHT should not be as high as with gel... becuase of the skin causing higher DHT.... I am going to call back about the findings of the T to DHT ratio.... so!!! lets see...
