There is a condition called phimosis, which is the severe curvature of one's penis. Most of us have some curve in different directions, that is common. In severe cases where pain is involved or where sexual intercourse etc is effected, there is a minor surgery that can be performed that will loosen the curve. I believe it involves cutting something inside the penis that will prevent the major curvature. I'm not sure I want sugery on my friend, but I wouldn't want painful erections either.
