Does anyone know if taking testosterone cause zero sperm counts?

Hi,

My husband and I are working with a surrogate. We are on our 4th cycle and I decided to have his sperm checked. I had it checked twice and his sperm counts were ZERO! He had his sperm checked two years ago with above average sperm! THe only thing that has changed in two years is he started on testosterone cream about 6 months ago... Someone told me this could be our culprit! If it is, I am so angry that our Dr. did not tell us this! We have wasted money and time with our surrogate.

If anyone has any information about this, please let me know. Our plan is to
stop the testosterone and have his sperm rechecked in Aug.
IS that enough time for his sperm to rebuild again?

THanks for any and all info,
Carolann

If you take testosterone then you block the two hormones (LH and FSH) necessary to stimulate sperm growth. The result will be a zero sperm count.

If you stop taking the testosterone it will take at least 3 months for new sperm to grow. If he has been taking testosterone for 6 months, then its unlikely his LH and FSH will respond immediately, so would add another few months for them to come back. Meantime you will have the added problem of having low testosterone while you wait.

At this point you should at least consider taking Clomid (a pill), which is a pituitary stimulator of LH and FSH, in order to speed up the process.

The other option is to take HCG and FSH injections. They are expensive but will begin working on his testicles quickly.

What ever you do, you will have a minimum of 3 months wait for new sperm.

And if your doctor knew you were trying to get pregnant and gave your husband testosterone gel, then I would find a new doctor because he obviously doesn't know much about making babies.

Thank you so much! I had a good feeling this was the culprit! I can't believe how far this sets us back! So frustrating.....

Do you know how the clomid should be taken? We are working independently with our surrogate.

Clomid is a prescription drug and you will need to find a fertility doctor to help guide you through the process. Clomid may not be enough depending upon why your husband started taking testosterone. If he started because he had symptoms of low testosterone, then you may have a more serious problem. If his testicles have stopped responding to LH and FSH, the sperm count may remain very low. If his pituitary has stopped making LH and FSH, then Clomid can't work and you will need the more expensive HCG/FSH shots.

Either way, you must first determine the cause by finding a fertility doctor and having the proper blood tests and stimulation test done.

What was the original reason for him starting testosterone and what tests were done to determine the problem?

Thanks Orion,

His testosterone levels were NORMAL, but on the low side of normal. He had no libido. He is only 38, so we saw a doc about his low libido. That is the only reason he went on it.

Low normal with no symptoms is fine, but in the face of low libideo with no obvious explanation, you have a more serious matter. The doc should have investigated his other hormones to be sure they were normal - which they most likely were not.

I suppose he didn't tell the doc he was interested in more kids? But just that the needed a boost to help in that department.

Yeah, he had all his levels checked. Found out that the Androgel was converting to estrogen! So, my whole health doctor put him on bio-identical testosterone cream with something in it that prevents conversion to estrogen. He was doing much better, but now we are going to be at ground zero again..

Bioidentical T won't make sperm. You need LH and FSH for that. If you take LH and FSH to make sperm, you don't need T at all; assuming his testicles are functioning normally (70% chance they are not).
