Question very itchy

i'm 14 and the skin really itches at a fairly small area where the penis meets the body. i say the body because its on the side that i see if i look down for example. it sometimes itches really hard. this has been like this for a while and a while ago, when i scratched, flakes of skin would fall sorta like snow i guess just not so severe. now the skin there is sorta easy to scratch up? whats this? and i know i don't have STD's or anything

Stop scratching, you will only irritate the area more. Use a mild anti-dandruff shampoo for starters, and keep the area clean. I would suggest loose-fitting underwear; give your boys some breathing room!

Hi guy!

It is really not possible to tell you what the problem is. Only a doctor would be able to examine you and give you some ideas.

However, your description of "flakes of skin" falling off "like snow" is similar to a condition I have, called "seborrhea". I have it in the hair on my head, not in my pubic area. (Do you mean that your rash is in your pubic hair?)

I had this condition for years and thought it was dandruff, so I used strong anti-dandruff shampoos, to little effect. I found out from a relative that this itchy, flaking skin is caused by seborrhea, an excessive secretion of an oily substance in the hair. A red, itchy rash used to appear on my cheeks either side of my nose; boy, it was embarrassing as a teenager!

Now that I use a coal-tar based scalp cleanser (a shampoo) and a coal-tar based soap, I have no problem.

I cannot say if you have the same problem, as it affects me only on my face and head. However, you could go to a pharmacy and buy some coal-tar based products to see if they have an effect. Ask for help there.

There is nothing to worry about if it is this sort of rash. However, ff I were you, I'd see a doctor if the coal-tar treatment doesn't start working in a week or two. I understand that you would feel embarrassed about approaching a doctor, but there may be no alternative.

On the other hand, you might have "jock itch". There is a post about this on this board from July. Have a look at it.

Let us know how you go, OK?

What you described sounds like jock itch to me. Its a fungal infection on the skin that causes itchiness and flaky skin. Its common in the groin area because of the sweat and warm environment.

There are several medications you can buy at a pharmacy for jock itch without a prescription. I would also try switching to boxers for a while if you don't wear them already to provide more air circulation down there to keep the sweat down. Wash the area well with soap and water everyday in the shower, dry it completely, and apply the jock itch medication (anti-fungal).
