Your symptoms aren't necessarily from low testosterone - they're not conclusive enough one way or the other. They could be from something else like depression, medications, etc.
If you were unable to get an erection at all, had a decrease in facial hair from what you had before, noticed a decrease in body hair, no sex drive, weight gain, etc., these are more conclusive symptoms.
BTW, most guys rarely get spontaneous erections while awake past their teen years. So that's normal.
Nonetheless, your doctor should have ordered a blood test for hormones - there's no harm in that. Heck even if you're just curious as to what your testosterone levels are should be reason enough for the doc to agree with the test. The test is simple and not expensive, so I don't know why your doc is reluctant.
You should seek another doctor for a second opinion. You could also buy a home testosterone test kit from a pharamacy or online. You send your saliva sample to a lab via mail, and get your results back by mail. Note: these test kits require a doctor's consent in New York and California.
