Discomfort in left testicle & in my left side

I've been experiencing discomfort in my left testicle since around June of 2009. It's pulling up on a year now. In June, I started to feel some pains, but not bad pains. Just a dull ache, and for the longest time I thought it was testicular cancer, even though there was and is still no lump on it.

Since then, the pain hasn't gotten any worse. Same dull ache that happens some days and doesn't happen on others. Since then though, I've also been feeling like a slight discomfort / slight burning sensation in my left side. I started to worry in February about this, so I began to google like a madman and read that pain in your left side along with testicular pain indicates that it can be cancer spreading...

I don't necessarily have testicular pain, just slight discomfort. I worried about it, so I went to see a doctor (I'm 18 years old). My doctor felt around it and told me there are no lumps, no swelling or anything that would really indicate that it's testicular cancer, so he just passed it off as nothing and told me to take Motrin every now and then if it's really bothering me. I did not have an ultrasound done, just a physical examination.

I notice at times that it's a little bit smaller than my right testicle, and it hangs lower as well. My question is, if I did have testicular cancer in my left testicle for about a full year now, would I be in some pain with severe symptoms by now?

Re: Discomfort in left testicle & in my left side

There are several conditions that can cause prolonged testicular pain. It is particularly common in men of your age group and is often dismissed by doctors for that reason. However, ten months is an unreasonably long time for you to suffer this sort of discomfort so I would recommend that you go back to your doctor and say that you would like further investigation. An ultrasound scan would put your mind at rest regarding cancer (which is anyway very unlikely). A probable cause would be epididymitis and, having excluded any physical abnormality, your doctor would probably prescribe an antibiotic.

After the physical examination my doctor told me that I don't have epididymitis.

Re: Discomfort in left testicle & in my left side

A varicocele (varicose vein in scrotum) will cause a dull ache, and it's usually the left side. I have had one for as long as I can remember and it only bothered me enough to see a urologist about a year ago, the discomfort comes and goes and sometimes I can also feel it in my left leg. The "low hanging" is also a symptom because of the higher temperature of the scrotum. Standing for long periods of time seems to aggravate mine, while lying down on my back seems to relieve it.

A hernia is something else to consider. If you were doing any sports or work or activity which might have caused one. I have them and saw a doctor who failed to diagnose them but eventually saw one who did.

Its worrying you... go back or get a second opinion from another doctor... you can imagine all kinds of things it might be or get suggestions of things that may cause those symptoms, but you need someone to examine you to tell you what it is.
