What is the cause if intense itching immediately around the anus, on both buttocks? I have bathed ad nauseum to try to make sure all soap is gone from this area when I shower, but still no cure. Could it be due to my diet, or some food I'm eating?

hmmm....is there any burning at all? my first thought is yeast. If that's the case I'd be drying it with hair dryer, using anti-fungal cream (even the female type creams work here). Don't reuse towels/washcloths, keeps those undergarments changed of course. Sweating definitely irritates, so try to keep cool!
I'd switch to Dove non-perfume soap too. THis is ph balanced.
A fungal or yeast infection is a strong possibility so an anti-fungal cream would be worth a try. Alternatively, spicy foods can also cause this. Relief can often be obtained with a 1% steroid cream but that should only be used for a week maximum.
Thanks for the info, CJ and Geek. This is a condition that seems to come and go for no apparent reason. I think the "spicy food" suggestion is probably right on. The itching seems to go away without using any anti-fungal agents, so my guess is that I need to watch what I'm eating. Hopefully this is the answer.
