Ok, last month, or about 6 weeks ago, I developed a red irritation on the underside of my glans on the shaft, just underneath the head of my penis. I had sex with my girlfriend, unprotected as we normally do, and it got even more red and irritated. I noticed she was a bit dry the few times we had sex, which I believe let do this. During this time, my penis head seemed to "crinkle" a bit and "dry" up, but there was no itch or irritation otherwise. She said she was not having a yeast infection. BTW, we have both been test, swabbed, and blood, and neither of us have any STIs. We stopped having sex and after the irritation of the glans and shaft then got very rad and a week later I saw my dermatologist.
The dermatologist said it was nothing more than irritation, but that he had not seen anything like it before, which was somewhat mildly alarming. He could not identify the flaking skin off the penis as a yeast infection. Regardless, he told me to use some 1% hydrocortisone ointment for about a week, which I did. HOWEVER, I had already been using it for a week prior, so I used that, liberally, for about 2 weeks and then stopped.
I noticed the redness was gone, but my shaft had turned a ligher, more pinkish color, where it is normally darker. BTW, I am circumcised. ALSO, the skin was a lot shinier and seemed "thinner". I then read online of various accounts that overuse of stronger (stronger than 1% hydrocortisone) steriod creams can have this affect on penis skin, which absorbs at a rate of 30%. So I sort of freaked a bit that the cream/ointment had damaged my glans even further.
Now, I masturbated a few times last week and the skin appears still be sensitive, irritated, it got really shiny and red. Even the papsules on the glans were raised. When I masturbated, I rubbed against my underwear, but only the base, but this clearly added more friction to the problem. I thought to put some Calmoseptine on it, as I read it can help with irritated skin burn. HOWEVER, after two days of using that, the glans turned even MORE white and discolored and more sensitive. I can almost see blood vessels now when erect: not comforting.
I have read COUNTLESS threads on the internet of this happening to other men. Either from psoriasis, balanitis, major friction burn, phimosis, steroid induced rosaecea, or quite simply from the skin-thinning effects of steriod cream.
I have decided NO masturbation for the next 4-6 weeks and no sex as well. Thankfully, my girlfriend understands and we have enjoy each other physically in other ways, but it is very hard to abstain.
My question is, has this happened to anyone else?
I have had friction burn from rough sex or my girlfriend being too rough with masturbation before, but a little Neosporin healed it within a few days. This is lasting a LONG time, so I am worried it is a much bigger problem.
Thanks in advance for the help with your own experiences
ive had something similar for a couple of months. red spot with some dry skin on my shaft. no pain itching or burning. i think it was caused by friction burn during sex when my girlfriend wasnt wet enough. all stds negative. dermatologist thought it was just irritation/ fricton. i put aquaphor on it for a while and that seemed to keep it mostly ok but then one day it happened again. i put hydrocortisone on and that cleared it up overnight. but then it happened again. i put hydrocort on again and it cleared right up. and i was gobbing on aquaphor a lot. but then the skin was looking thinner and just not normal. not fully healed. so i stopped putting anything on and let it heal on its own for 2 wks. no sex. the skin started looking heLthier and more normal. but after sex, a little redness came back. i then tried using a condom to protect it during sex. but the area still became red after sex.
now i think the dryness is coming back too. i started putting gold bond ultimate skin healing lotion on it yesterday becsuse that supposedly has ingredients to help heal skin. i dont know if its helping. ill try condoms with sex for a while and the gold bond. if that doesnt work ill try some monistat cream but this dorsnt seem like a yeast infection. even the derm said that. but not sure what else to do at this point.
best of luck to you. let me know if you figure out a cure.
I think the gold bond lotion was helping some, maybe just by keeping it moisturized. and who knows, maybe the aloe, vitamins a, c, and e, helped too. i had sex with my girlfriend without a condom (was thinking about wearing a condom just to limit friction/irritation on the area) 2 days in a row and the area got maybe a little pink, but not red like it was doing. and the next day it seemed pretty good, nearly normal.
but it still looked a little weird. the skin in that area was a little sort of dry-looking. it was dull and obviously different from the surrounding skin. also, it sort of itched a tiny tiny bit when i put on the gold bond lotion. and i'm putting the lotion all over my p.enis, but it wasn't itching anywhere else. so that made me think something was still off. i started putting lamisil AT jock itch cream (i actually got the cvs generic terbinafine cream) on it just 3 days ago. its safe for that area and it's the shortest acting (you only have to apply it for 1 week), and it works against a variety of funguses and yeast, including candida.
i've also been sitting around naked during the day. kind of weird, but i figure it's letting the cream do its work without getting rubbed off and if it is a fungus, that should help wipe it out too. so far it seems pretty good.
and then i take a shower later in the evening and put on the gold bond lotion to help keep that area from drying out because i think the terbinafine cream can be a little drying.
who knows if any of this is helping. i might just be getting better due to time. i hope this goes away though and i can get back to normal life. this has been really really frustrating.
good luck to you. post if you have any updates. i think the more info that's out there about this the better.
Hey Zsa, thanks for the update. It sounds like things are going a bit ok for you.
For me, things have not changed at all. My shaft and glans, where I applied the hydrocortisone liberally for 2 weeks, are still discolored--much pinker/lighter--and the skin is waxy, shiney, and showing more blood vessels when erect.
I did play with it a bit last week, so I'm sure that didn't help, but I am seeing ZERO progress.
Then today, I put some moisturizer on it, 3 times, and when I got home it was redder in some areas than before.
I think for me I just need to not put anything on it for a while. I have considered getting the yeast infection cream JUST IN CASE, but nothing itches nor looks like anything I've seen from pics online of a yeast infection.
It has been 2 months since this all started. It has been 6 weeks since I stopped using the hydrocortisone. I FIRMLY believe the hydrocortisone has exacerbated whatever problem I had initially.
I just want my penis back to normal. It has been very frustrating and it's making me a bit depressed.
It might just be from the hydrocortisone. Or just the irritation. Or the combination of both. I've read a bunch of accounts where dermatologists say the skin on the penis once irritated can continue to get redder after any friction and that it can take a long time (months to a year) to go back to normal. And hydrocortisone can apparently do that too. But you only applied it for 2 weeks and 1% is pretty low concentration, so you probably didn't do any lasting damage.
Yours sounds similar to mine. The pinker color and being waxy/shiny looking. I think mine improved a lot when I didn't do anything to it and didn't apply anything for a couple of weeks. Of course that didn't heal it entirely. The Gold Bond might've helped too. Or maybe just time. But then again I'm not even sure I'm completely back to normal just yet. Will probably know after I see my girlfriend this weekend.
But if you don't have any other symptoms and no pain, no itching, it's probably just a friction burn and will probably just take time to heal completely. I did read one thing online where they said sometimes the skin can more or less look healed, but the tissue underneath might still be sort of damaged, so then any sort of friction can make it look all red again.
If you're still freaking out (no offense, this stuff freaks me out too! haha), you could always go see another dermatologist. Or maybe try one of those online sites where you could submit a photo to a dermatologist and he could give you his opinion on whether there's anything wrong. That Dr. Alan Rockoff guy seems to be pretty good.
Many thanks for your reply. I think it helps just to hear from someone else's experience. Like I said, this is not a case of balanitis, b/c the waxey, shiney look is only when erect. Also, the skin is still more sensitive than before in this area, so it just has not healed or returned to normal.
I'm going to keep it free from anything for a while and see how I go.
The early part of June I was directed by my urologist to use a steroid cream, clobetasol propionate on my shaft 4 - 6 weeks. I began noticing a lightening of the foreskin.
The longer I used it the lighter it became. I haven't used it for the last 2 months and the light skin remains. I am beginning to wonder if it ever return to its normal color.
Hey man, thanks for the reply. It has been exactly 2 months for me and I took a much milder steroid cream for only 2 weeks.
This stuff is DANGEROUS and I cannot believe that doctors are so quick to tell you to put it on your penis WITHOUT any instruction or warning of side effects. The more I think about this, the more I want to file a complaint for malpractice. So what if the majority do not experience these symptoms. The ONLY way I found about about this was by looking at my penis and then searching it ONLINE, which is ironic because many doctors will tell you not to look online for diagnosis.
I got better advice online than I did from two dermatologists here in Australia.
Give it time and see. I can handle if the color never comes back, but I cannot handle if the texture and ruggedness comes back.
I'm doing better after finishing the terbinafine (jock itch/yeast infection cream, AKA Lamisil AT) treatment. I put it on the spot once a day for 7 days. Not sure if that helped or if it was just time. But the area doesn't really look red at all, not even after sex. And it looks pretty healthy and normal just like the surrounding skin. Maybe the gold bond lotion helped too.
Oh, I also used AstroGlide Gel as a lubricant for sex. That stuff is thicker than the astroglide lube and really seems to help. It's the same stuff as KY jelly, so you could also try that as well.
So I'm hoping this thing whatever it was is finally gone. It was about 3 months for me. Maybe it was just a friction burn and took a long time to heal. Hope my information helps somebody else if they find themselves with the same problem.
I will be at the 2 month mark on Oct. 20 since quitting the hydrocortisone. About 6 days ago I stopped putting ANYTHING on it (moisturizures, vitamin creams, vaseline, etc.) and it seems to have already begun to feel better. The skin is still a bit delicate and sensitive, but not nearly as it was just a week and a half ago.
Maybe the 3 month mark is the key and I feel I am already making progress. This is already making a difference in my day-to-day psyche.
I'm not with anyone at the moment, so no sex and no masturbation also appears to be working for the better.
I'm glad thinks are looking up for both of you. I've had this condition for a while but I wrongfully attributed it to Peyroniese Disease and never even tried to deal with it.
It took me a while to realize that Peyroniese is long gone and that my actual problem is that I've wrongfully used hydrocortisone for too long which has lead to skin thinning on the head of the penis thus causing me discomfort/pain during sex.
I'm now looking online to see whether there are any creams or solutions that would help heal the skin properly but I do not see a consistent answer and I'm done with putting any cream on the penis unless I'm 100% sure that no further harm will come.
Abstinence seems be working the best and that is what I'm sticking to for now.
Thanks for posting and sorry to hear you've had to deal with this.
I can tell you that I just surpassed the 2 month mark and mine is almost back to normal. I freaked out big time after I noticed side the effects of hydrocortisone on my penis, and others who experienced the same said not to worry and that things would soon get back to normal: they were right!!!
I'm not 100% back to normal, but will be there soon, I can tell.
Tell us, what hydrocortisone cream did you use and for how long?
