penis damage from steroid creams

I've used several prescribed steroid creams to try and get rid of some irritation on my penis head. Inittialy the inflamation went down so I assumed the creams were working. However, ever since when I get a erection my penis head apperas very shiny, wrinkly and red in appearance. I have been to many doctors and they always say it seems fine but i know it is not as I know my own body. Can anyone advise a way of how I can get back to normal. SOme people have said abstaining from mastubation or sex will eventually let the skin heal. Its been about 4-5 months since I last used any steroid cream on my penis, but I've only managed to not masturbate for around 2 weeks. Will this eventually recover if I just leave my penis alone for as long as possible?

Re: penis damage from steroid creams

I used Eumovate cream the longest for a few months on and off. I used Canasten only for a short time then Daktacort cream for a very short time around a week. Ive also used oils like Bio Oil to try and solve the issue but nothing seems to work.

Re: penis damage from steroid creams

okey, then you are in the same situation as me almost. I used the same potency cortisone as you for 7weeks

But what i have read on the internet it should recover but i donīt belive it until i see it. It can take 3-6months or even more.

Have an apoitment with dermatologist in some weeks i hope for good news.

Im 6 weeks from stopping cortisone now, my skin has become thicker i think. But it is far from good, and i got rosacea i think. If i get any good advice from my doctor i get back to you

hi
i suffer with alot of scratching been going to the doctors for years with it been given different diganose's everytime then a doctor prescribe me Daktarin it's good it stops the itching till it becomes hot sweaty down there and the doctor said take my pants down let it get some fresh air to it might do it good but when there hot and sweaty nothing works and i am nearly clawing at them and leaving me in agony. It gets me down quite alot feel depressed that i have to scratch them more worried about if i could be damaging my penis foreskin round the head and my ball sack area that can be very itchy

I am also worried about if a penis can shrink from the treatments for the itching? Also a while ago before the itching i have noticed like white blodges on the head of the penis that worries me as using creams on the head would have thought got rid of the white blodges i have been diagnosed with ezcemea before and the latest 1 was Balanitis xerotica obliterans and i had never heard of it before till the doctor mentioned it

No their is no treatment for this i have been at 5 doctors now and all that they recommened were moisturizers. 3 of them were dermatologist and they didnīt even notice the atrophy and making up a lots of things and said it wasnīt cortsione that hade done this to me.

Dr wheatgrass doesnīt work so donīt try it. I used it for 3months didnīt do anything i think.

To anyone who will read this never use cortisone!

Re: penis damage from steroid creams

Hey guys, I have been having the same problem. I had a tinea or candida infection (a biopsy was never done) in the groin area and was prescribed lotrisone, combination of an antifungal medicine and betamethasone, a class III steroid.

The infection occurred around the groin area then when I started using the steroid the redness and inflammation occurred on the penis glans and foreskin. I went back to the doctor and he said if was the infection and to apply the steroid to that area. Big mistake. I used the steroid on the penis glans for over 6 weeks, total use 8 weeks. The redness did go away but after stopping for a few days it became highly irritated, thinning foreskin with capillaries showing, red, very sensitive, red ring around the corona or bottom of the glans, and there is a constant burning sensation. I went to another doctor and he prescribed oral terbinafine which cleared the infection.

It has been over 6 weeks since stopping the steroid and I am still experiencing the same symptoms on the penis. It's depressing to say the least and has consumed me. Most dermatologists and especially doctors aren't able to tell the difference between an infection and a reaction from a steroid. So far I have tried, emu oil, eucerin, cetaphil restoreaderm, vaseline, a few other lotions, and I have been taking supplements and eating healthier. There hasn't been much if any improvement yet.

I would be interested to know if any of you have seen any improvements? I have read that with time this will heal and it all depends on the potency and duration of the steroid and where it was used. Unfortunately I used a very potent steroid on a delicate part of the body so I am thinking that I have at least 6-12 months to go, hopefully sooner though. I just hope that this is not permanent.

No this is permanent if your skin like brokedown you are screwed the skin will never heal again. If you just thinned a bit it might heal. I recommend you to just learn to live with it because there is no help to get. "Doctors dont know what skin atrophy is and what cortisone does". Yes is it true they lie to you and say it is something else, visiting any doctors i a waist of time they take your money and send you away.

Re: penis damage from steroid creams

Well, I think I am starting to see some improvements with the skin thickening back up. It's just that there is a constant redness on the foreskin and at the bottom of the corona. It's quite bothersome and there is a consistent burning sensation there. I have read about a condition called red skin syndrome which is what can happen when withdrawing from overuse of topical steroids. Because the absorption of steroids in the genital area is very high it may not take very long for this to happen. I think this will get better but it is going to take some time. For now it is irritating as hell and I'll never touch topical steroids again.

Yes you may improve some but to get back to normal i think is almost impossible.

I really hope you will get better. I also got red skin after stopping my penis turned like 100% red after stopping steroids that isnīt a permanent sideaffect but rednes caused by thinning will only go away if skin thickens.

Re: penis damage from steroid creams

I suffer from the same problem. Pretty much the same story as everyone else, too much cortisone for too long. The skin in the center of the penis has thinned and it's appearance has changed.

I've read about this in a few threads and from what I gather there is no cream that will help, only time, patience and a healthy lifestyle. I know it is tough for a young guy to deal with this but obsessing about this will not help. I've been through it myself and all it will do is obstruct the healing process as we tend to do dumb things when anxious.

Re: penis damage from steroid creams

Hey guy202 & Boromir, how long has it been since you stopped using the steroid? From what I have read it can take anywhere between a few months to 3 years for it to heal. I'm considering asking a doctor to prescribe me doxycycline for it. There has been some research on that antibiotic cuing red scrotum syndrome. There is also some research by a dermatologist in California on red skin syndrome and topical steroid withdrawal you might find interesting to read about. It is a bummer, I just got a girlfriend too and not sure what to say when I can't do anything intimate with her and that sucks. So far I've been eating super healthy, cut out all soda, alcohol, most caffeine, and also taking a lot of supplements like vitamin c, a, e, zinc, tumeric, fish oil. I'm trying to exercise every day by going running. I wear loose fitting cotton clothes and don't apply any friction to the area. I think there has been a little bit of improvement but the burning and redness continue. It really is a shame though that doctors won't listen or communicate the adverse side effects of overusing steroids. I've been feeling down about it but trying to stay focused on the positive and do what ever it is to heal. If I come across anything that will help I'll let you know. Good luck guys and I hope you all get better too.
