Do Not Pass . . . see it as jail - Mental Health Message Board

My Dear Board Friends,

My son is gradually recovering from a nervous breakdown from mid-June 2004.

This nervous breakdown seemed to have happened because of the legal medication his doctor prescribed for him. Medication had paradoxical effect . . . .

Anyhow, I visit him daily. However, each day he begs repeatedly to come home. He got really desperate yesterday. After this desperate visit I telephoned the hospital to ask them if he could get weekend pass.

I know I am highly stressed at present. Yet, I thought that if a patient is improving and begging to come home. A few hours home and then returning to the hospital would make recovery faster.

I spoke to a senior male nurse who informed me that I am allowing my child (aged 17) to manipulate me and run my life. WELL to me the whole concept of working with the medical staff to assist with a positive result for the patient ran through the window.

If my child has been begging for over two weeks to come home and each day he is more determined to do so. Am I that whatever to think a break from the hospital he refers to as "JAIL" is letting my child manipulate me. Furthermore, what other evidence do you have that he mainpulates me?

To cut to the chase. I am only human and again I place this burden in God's hand.

Love is a powerful emotion. Especially between a mother and a child.

I would strongly recommend that you listen to the doctors on this one...
It would be like interrupting a rehab program in the middle. There is a risk of relapse - of halted recovery - if the process is stopped before it is complete.

Nervous breakdown is a phrase that isn't used much anymore; were you given any other diagnosis?

I hope things pick up for you and your son soon. As he is recovering he should be able to come home soon. Maybe you could talk to staff about your concerns and ask for their reasons behind dissallowing him to come home for a few hours? I think that if he's home and has to come back it will only make being there harder? Although that is only my opinion. I wish you all the best. Take care xx

Well,

As I said in the first post.

I prayed to God.

I did not telephone the hospital but I got a voice mail from them inviting me to come pick up my son.

This I did. So he is now asleep in his bed. He will be with me until Tuesday July 13, 2004.

I am happy to say that so far all has gone well.

In terms of nervous breakdown that is the closest term I have gotten from the medical staff.

Hopefully, in Tuesday's follow-up I may be given a more specific term of problem.
