I have been struggling with depression on and off for a year and I have tried alternatives to overcome my depression, but nothing is working. I have decided that I need to see a psychologist, I dont know how to go about finding a good one in my area. Do I need a refferal from my physician to see a psychologist? Also in order to see a psychiatrist would a psychologist have to refer me to one?

A lot of this depends on your health insurance rules. I wouldn't think that your insurance would need a referral for the psychologist but it might for the psychiatrist. I know that you do not need a referral from a psychologist to see a psychiatrist. Are you aware of the depression board here? Remember that if you see a psychiatrist he will put you on medication and not really do any therapy. Some people go to a psychologist first and see if therapy is all that is needed. Frequently, the psychologist can tell if a person might need meds and then suggest a visit to a psychiatrist. Good luck to you.

make sure they are board certified. Call their lisencing board and check to see if complaints have been filed against them.

Basically call around and tell them about your situation.

Best therapies are : Cognitive, emotion focused, behavioral, and adlerian.
